I would like to see some Dell and Microsoft collaboration within IdeaStorm.IdeaStorm has had much more emphasis on Linux than Windows despite the fact the Dell customer base for Windows is much larger than that of Linux.Ideas to do with Microsoft products and Dell systems need involvement of both companies and Microsoft don't seem to have an IdeaStorm like service. There are problems with Microsoft Products (Windows 8 in particular) and Dell Desktops. The user reviews for the popular Inspiron 660 and XPS 8500 list Windows 8 as the most mentioned con yet all these users are happy with Windows 7. I expect the XPS 8700 to have similar reviews. This is because the tablet interface alongside new start menu with lack of commonly used icons has been enforced by Microsoft on Windows 8 and much customisation is lost from Windows 7.Reinstallation DVDs not being shipped with systems and being made hard to request is also an issue which has upset customers alot. A download link for clean installation is desired by many customers. There are probably a wide variety of other ideas which would likely be generated if a Microsoft Products Storm Session would be created and also it would likely attract more customers to the Dell Community.

I think M18x should be supported in India and Dell need to promote its advertising/marketing of alienware in India, and customisation should be allowed in India, it was a pity we couldnt upgrade to the 680M in the R4, but hopefully that wont be the case in R5.

I have noticed that alot of my ideas have had more votes on the Dell Community than on IdeaStorm because of the larger user base. We have requested a single sign on somewhat unsuccessfully through the Dell Community. However in addition a Facebook addin for each idea would also be great where a users "like" would be equivalent to an "idea promotion". A Google mail and Microsoft Account extension would also be welcomed. In addition to enabling more users to vote, this would place IdeaStorm via IdeaStorm ideas on users Facebook pages promoting both IdeaStorm and the Dell Community.Note the Facebook login aswell as Google mail and Microsoft Account would only be for users who wish to promote ideas. If a user decided to post a new idea they would still need to join IdeaStorm the conventional way.

I would like to request Dell to make Dell Microsoft Operating System .iso files available to download. These .iso files should include, the latest service packs, the latest version on Internet Explorer for that OS and nothing else. For example: • Window XP Professional 32 bit with SP3 & IE8 • Windows Vista Business Edition 32 bit with SP2 & IE9 • Windows 7 Professional Edition 64 bit with SP1 & IE9 Of course make all versions of Windows available to download from say 2000 Professional including Vista/7 starter. This has become more critical because Dell are (by default) no longer shipping OS DVDs when you purchase a new Dell system. In fact the lower end systems such as the Inspiron do not even have the option to purchase reinstallation media with the system. While there is a link to request media in the U.S. It is less convienient to get the media elsewhere. I think even alot of U.S. users would prefer being able to download the .iso file direct from Dell. I know there is the Dell Datasafe program but its method will give you all the preinstalled software etc. which the end user may or may not want. I know that many end users will not create the media and only will only look for it when it is too late. e.g. at hard drive failure. In addition I and some other users have experienced some reduced performance after installing the latest Service Packs/Internet Explorer. This may be due to some conflicts with ATI/Realtek drivers with the Service Pack. Restoring to factory settings cannot fix this problem as the Service Pack is again installed after the drivers. Installing Windows and then the Service Pack prevents such a problem. A Dell windows installation DVD with the Service Packs slipstreamed would be the best solution to prevent this problem. Digital River, Microsofts online store partner have .iso files available for both Windows Vista and Windows 7 which can be found here. These can be used in conjunction with a Dell OEM product key, however it does not give the Dell logo in system and phone activation is required. Dell are a big corporation and should be able to settle a deal with Microsoft to make the Dell custom .isos available for download. There could be an online form where the user has to enter in both their Windows Product key and Service Tag providing that their Product Key is not faded. For those that do have a faded product key, there must be a backdoor somewhere a user can instead submit a picture of their faded COA and be allowed to proceed. I have made a sketch of what the form should entail. It is fairly simplistic. Since the first stage of the form makes the user input their service tag, links could be provided to Dell parts and upgrades. Dell of course may make additional revenue here by recommending the user to purchase a larger hard drive from Dell or additional memory from Dell and say it is Dell recommended to do these upgrades before installing Windows. Note they could also have a link to upgrade to a newer version of Windows such as Windows 7 Ultimate or an upgrade from XP/Vista to 7. This will suit Microsoft aswell as it will provide them with more revenue. The user could then purchase the software upgrade and instead download that .iso file. Could do a similar thing with Microsoft Office OEM Upgrade discount or Full OEM version if not originally purchased with the system. I was going to say that Dell could charge a reasonable fee of $5 for the service of downloading the .iso files although I would rather that they wouldn't. However I think if it has the suggested OEM hardware and software upgrades, then it is probably a better means of revenue for them. Just to note I posted a similar idea here before but that was based on XP and not as well thought out.

i own an inspirion 14/14z, and i must say, it is impossible to access the hard drive without taking the laptop completely apart. not only is this highly unusual, but it also not a smart idea. i risk voiding my warranty just to replace a HDD? thats insane! i have never before seen laptop that had a hard drive inaccessable from the bottom. maybe back in the 80s or 902(before my time), but as of 2013?! this type of thing quite frankly, is unacceptable. people risk breaking thier laptops just to switch out an HDD. not cool dell. i love dell and alienware, i expect better honestly.dell needs to make it known on the webpages of these laptops, that the hard drive is not removeable from the bottom. this is a deal breaker for me. had i known this was the case, i would have NEVER bought this laptop. the alienware m14(which i also own), is much easier to take out the hard drive than the 14r.suppose what do i do if i have to back up this hard drive now? or replace it if it dies? dell should do an external HDD promo for people who buy this model, because it would be eaiser to back up the drive from time to time rather than replace it.

BEWARE IF ORDERING SSD BOOT DRIVEI just ordered a brand new M14x from Dell with 750gb HDD and the 128gb SSD Boot drive option (which adds about £300) with the top i7 processor etc etc, in total spending £1,950 on the system. When the machine arrived the operating system was installed on the 750gb HDD as the boot drive (not the specified SSD), I queried this with Dell as it was clearly not what I ordered (including asking if I ordered another one if I would get the same problem - as they were refunding and picking up the current machine) only to get the following response..."Our manufacturing team is currently investigating this internally and has not advised the concrete details on the issue with the configuration. We wouldn’t be able to advise at the moment whether the machine you would be placing, if the OS would be installed on the SSD drive or on the standard HDD."When I asked if the offered 'next day in-home' support or any of their engineers could fix this or just swap the operating system on to the correct drive they simply ignored me, they have arranged for my currently laptop to be picked up and refunded (which is all well and good), but it would appear Dell cannot build the 'SSD Boot drive' option as advertised on their site. They seem pretty happy to just refund the money and have the system returned which would suggest they simply can't build that option... it would appear they don't need my £2k or business. So if you're thinking of getting the SSD boot drive option I would suggest going else where or learning to do it yourself if you are going to order from Dell.
