Mini 9 netbook Ubuntu price must be cheaper than XP price with same config

OK, one more time. Dell marketing must think we are stupid or can't figure out how to add. There are three Mini 9 configurations: WinXPHome_fat, WinXPHome_lean, and Ubuntu_superlean. They are priced at $449, $399 and $349, respectively, after the usual mystery Dell discounts on only the WinXPHome versions. However, when you price out the Ubuntu model with the features of the WinXPHome versions it comes out the same compared to the WinXPHome_lean, and $65 more than the WinXPHome_fat. DUH??? Where is the inherent discount because there is no external cost to build it with Ubuntu, and how can you explain a surprise $65 charge to build it like the WinXPHome_fat model (1GB RAM/16GB SSD/0.3MPxl Camera)? They do have a chance to fix this before the Ubuntu version ships IN OCTOBER!! I guess Dell developers are as clueless as the marketers since they need an extra month to figure out how to install Ubuntu. Here's a hint, use PXE. You should also add a disclaimer that the WinXP version is the XPHome and that it is really crippled compared to WinXPPro, while the Ubuntu is the full featured version (well except that you are probably still removing Wine and the OpenOffice suite from your install so you don't PO that chair throwing ogre in Redmond. Dell Mini Ubuntu (Linux) Missing Webcam

It would be great if the Dell Mini product site would add back the webcam option for the Unbuntu Linux version of the product. When the site first launched http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-9 , both the 0.3 megapixel camera and the 1.3 megapixel camera were available as configuration options, but they have since been dropped from the site when ordering the linux version of the product. Any ideas from Dell on why the change in product offering? Any chance that this will be added back in as a product configuration offering? I have to imagine that the drivers for a webcam are available, and if not, there are plenty of developers who would be interested in building them. Rubberize netbook case

I love my Mini 9. I run XP, office 2007, etc. and I use it more than my standard laptop. However, it slides off my knee, gets scratched, etc. I would pay extra (~$15) for a thin rubberized coating on the entire surface, similar to the coating often applied to PDAs, cases, or tools. The SSD in the mini 9 should have a partition as big as the actual size (currently limited to 4GB)

Regardless of the size of the SSD (mine is a 16GB), the disk has a 4GB partition where the Ubuntu OS is installed. The rest is not even formatted. This is a BIG bug, because for the partition to be resized it takes actually a high level of expertize. The unoccupied space can be formatted as an additional partition, but the original is simply to small to accommodate more than the bare minimum. But this is besides the point. If I buy 16GB of space I demand all of it to be available with no further action. Status Update Please see john_h's comment
Make Dell Mini kid-friendly

These are great. But if you want to sell a lot of them and build a profitable new market, give them great kid colors (allow them to accessorize) in time for Christmas and maybe work a deal with some edutainment company to pre-load some fun and good educational software (or wireless access to PBS.com). Make the case and the software kid-friendly, kid-safe. Maybe get noggin/nickelodeon to sell episodes on iTunes that can be one-click downloaded and watched. For the older kids, cool word and math games, homework help, etc. You could build an entire kid-safe area on dellKidz@dell.com (think Webkinz or noggin). Then you’ve got this generation for life with opportunity to also sell add-ons, peripherals etc. There’s a whole market out there for siblings who get dragged to soccer/basketball/hockey/baseball games who need something constructive to do while their sister/brother play. Would also work for school systems – add OLPC type connectivity. Add a touch of Green and give portion of the proceeds to poor schools/kids and you’ve got a winner -- if you keep the base prices under $399 and under $299. inspiron 9 why not 10?

I would like to suggest to Dell product designers to make an inspiron 10 which is 1 notch higher than that of the now available inspiron 9. Though I have not had a handson yet with inspiron 9, I think this version is more geared to children and teens of course but giving a 10 inch version of display panel would make it like a work horse and social connectivity net top for a lot more of students in the university...after all the name dell should also be related to innovative designs and consumer sensitivity Status Update We now offer a Mini 10
