More RAM!

Thu Jan 29 14:14:55 GMT 2009 - Jan 29, 2009

@chris_m:  "Since Windows XP is being replaced by Windows Vista, the option for 512MB of ram is going away."

That's too bad - in many ways.

If Dell's been listening to *ANYTHING* on IdeaStorm, they'd realize that not all Dell customers run Vista even if that is what you're paid to pre-install.

Some want XP to stay longer (and Dell is big enough to negotiate that with their software vendor if they wanted).  Some run non-windows OS's on Dells.   Some will want to run Window 7 which is allegedly lighter-weight than Vista.

"Dell's paying salesfarce"

Surely not.  It looks more like a complex joint-marketing partnership where each company hires the other one to hype their beta products.

Sun Marketing wants to claim their commodity clusters are better than large Unix boxes -- so Salesforce Marketing  loudly announces that they're throwing out their Sun Fire E25K's and switches to commodity dells.

Salesforce wants to pretend they're good at getting customer feedback -- so Dell Marketing starts generating PR about how they listen to customer feedback using Salesforce's pre-release software.

Perhaps in their accounting books they made it look like they "paid" for it.   But I imagine behind it all a biz-dev guy from each company got together and said "Hey - you know that marketing co-promotion we're doing together anyway -- if I 'pay' you $10mil and you 'pay' me $10mil we'll both get our revenue quota's with just this one deal".

Children's PC

Tue Oct 07 17:31:41 GMT 2008 - Oct 7, 2008

The main feature I'd want in a kids computer is spill-proof keyboards and mice. Regarding the color, my kids seem to like one that looks "like daddy's". Surely you could give them access to your PC so long as they don't have "administrator" access, tho. At 3 my kid knew how to find his own account and log in with his one-character at the time password; so he couldn't destroy any of my information.

Don't make us buy Vista

Sun Sep 21 17:25:00 GMT 2008 - Sep 21, 2008

@gbytes: "I made Vista run... I admit I had to disable many services and Aero, and it was a pain to do it,... Also let's not forget Vista, unlike XP and older windows, doens't need to be re-installed every 3 month to enjoy peek performance of your system. ....Is it legal? I am not sure,... " LOL. @gbytes: "4GB of RAM (as XP nor Vista or any 32-bit OS actually uses your 4GB of RAM ..." Of course 32-bit OS's can and have for a very long time -- ever since Intel increased the number of address lines on its CPUs (yes, even the 32-bit ones) to 36. Even 32-bit windows 2000 happily supported 32-GB of physical ram Pretty much every 32-bit x86 OS that can run on Pentium Pro or newer x86 CPUs can access over 4GB RAM, unless they intentionally restrict it to something smaller for licensing reasons. And you can see that microrosft loves arbitrary memory restrictions so they can upsell you to more expensive versions.

More RAM!

Wed Sep 17 19:54:10 GMT 2008 - Sep 17, 2008

I think in this rare case it's honest. Dell no doubt constantly reviews how much memory costs; and as soon as a 1GB memory card is almost as cheap as a 1/2 GB card they'll implement this idea.
