Big Ram For Notebooks

160 points posted to Desktops and Laptops by walkerjian Jan 31

RAM is cheap now. I would like a notebook with 8, 16 32 ++ gigs of ram. Obviously would have to run a 64 bit OS. If not then just use extra ram as battery backed HD (notebook right?) or just a super swap file. Should be able to partition my RAM to support this

Yes, yes, yes! And then they would have to make [better] sure that all those device drivers work for the x64 editions of Windows (or Linux). RAM is definitely cheap enough. I would LOVE to have 8GB in my 1730 :)

If you are running a program that requires that much memory to function properly, then the program is probably going to be too taxing for a notebook to handle. Remember, the more memory you add the more heat dissipation you need. You can only dissipate soo much heat in a notebook and still have it notebook size.

What part about 1730 was not understood? It is already hot. And "a" program may be Crysis. More than that, though, I want it for doing dev work and graphics design work at the same time - fast. With 8GB+ RAM, my 1730 really would become a mobile desktop!     :)

Hah. *Dell's* RAM isn't cheap. Just look at their sell page. It costs about $500 to $700 for 4GB of Dell branded RAM.

Well, when you get a system with 2GB already in there, the 2GB extra costs like $300. (sometimes more) That's still burglary. Someone else had a post about that if you care to look for and 'mote it.
