Make Vostro 1700 notebook available with Windows XP Pro

190 points posted to Vostro products by itpro Jan 31

Make Vostro 1700 notebook available with Windows XP Pro.

I've downgraded a few to XP, but it's annoying and costly.

I could supply Dell with the drivers that XP needs to work on the 1700.

They are all available online, but it takes some time to collect them.

Many businesses still want to use XP - if you're trying to market Vostro to the small business market, make XP available.

I wouldn't want to support Vista yet in a business environment - until Microsoft comes out with at least one service pack to fix all the glitches.

As long as Dell continues to offer all flavors of Vista on the Vostro 1700, fine.

XP may actually perform faster. Problem is it isn't much cheaper.

Actually that XP performs faster is not always the case. I for example upgraded XP to Vista on my Dell Inspiron XPS Generation 2 notebook PC and most of the time on that PC Vista performs just as fast as XP did.

awesome. and it is getting better all the time. but definitely not (yet) for games or other cutting-edge applications. this may be rectified over time, but this (and getting particular hw to work at *all*) is what had held me back until recently.

I see they now offer this. (Maybe Dell actually saw this!)

That has been a trend, actually. You can't always get every system with XP, but most business systems now offer it. Problem is, that may mean you take a hit on the hardware. (lesser-powered gfx cards seem to end up in those XP configs, at times)

Hi Everyone,
I'm Robert_P the Small Business Liaison for Dell Community.

Great topic for discussion!! There's actually a post on direct2dell today that addresses this topic. Here's the link:

Now you can chose wether or not you want to downgrade.
