Make Interchangable Laptop Covers/Skinz!

130 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops by melissacann2 01/30/08

I for one, would LOVE to see you make interchangable laptop skinz not made of stickers! I hate the thought of sticking some gummie cover on my laptop that would peel off in a few weeks. Than I'm stuck with a sticky mess! I want to be able to look at something cool and fresh every now and then and to able to change the look of my laptop would be cool!

A static cling would work.

Even cooler would be if the skin could be some software-programmable image (perhaps a LCD or OLED or soemthing) - but that's probably not possible.

OLED's rock. My little Zen player is so cool. I can't wait for OLED t-shirts :)

Dell actually tried this out on their old batch of Inspirons, I remember them offering something along the lines of a "Venitian Blue" and "(faux)Carbon Fibre" variations. Sadly, I found the implementations a bit lacking and that they didn't give the laptops the solid feel that the new lines have.

That said, if Dell could find a better way to implement this into their systems, without comprimising the bulk or quality of them. I don't see why not. Personally I'd perfer it if they'd include a "premium" selection of interchangeable designs - maybe made of real carbon fibre or metal, as well as an exclusive range of designs and patterns (a la their new thin 15" incher).

Maybe introducing this onto their gaming 17"incher might work well, especially if they aligned themselves with gaming developers to create exclusive covers of upcoming games and the like. Kinda like what the 360 is doing at the moment.

There is another Idea posted concerning interchangeable backings to the top of the system, so you can switch out colors accordig to your mood, etc. It's not the entire unit casing, because that isn't feasible but it's a start.

Where's the link to this other idea about interchangeable backings?

I'm looking around and I've lost the post ... :-( I'll keep looking to see if I can find it again.

@james_g, there are four different ones that I remember, that pertain to the same idea. There may be more.

Well When I ordered my 1525 back in Nov. 07 there wasn't a choice in color. You got silver with white. It shouldnt be hard to do! And those cling on are no better than the sticker skinz in my opinion. I'd like to see something thats solid....made to interchange then some flimsy tacky looking skin.
