Higher quality lcd screens for XPS M1530

1390 points posted to Monitors and Displays, XPS products by marcusesq Jan 13

My brothers XPS M1530 arrived today fitted with a WSXGA+ screen and its horrible and grainy. I didn't get a chance to see weather its fitted with the Samsung or LG screen.
I don't know weather this is a quality control issue or just penny pinching by using cheap screens but until its fixed there is no NO WAY I'll be placing an order.
How anyone could design a laptop this good only to ruin the whole deal by fitting nasty screens is beyond me.
It seems this is not an isolated case either.

To see the extent of the problem look

http://www.notebookreview.com. ( search for "grainy screen"

http://www.google.com ( search for "dell laptop grainy screen" )

I guess it must be a Samsung. Possibly the famous SEC3350. They should just stopp selling it.
If it it the LG, you should post it soon, as it is important to know about this, as generally LG are very good, especially WSXGA+ ones.
I guess one of the weakest point of Dell are its poor quality displays.

I have the SEC3350 fitted on my m1530. It really is a poor quality display. I'm currently in the process of trying to get it exchanged.

I have an M1330 (which has the same resolution panel). Even on the 1330 it would benefit from being higher resolution - perhaps 1440 wide instead of 1280. It's a wonderfully bright LED backlit panel that's great outside (with a SENSIBLE range of lower brightness options for indoor use) though.

The M1530 doesn't make much sense to me. It seems like it's inferior to the 1330 in almost every way, and in fact to its Inspiron cousin as well.

Promoted. Dell should not use sub standard screens on the xps line. SEC3350 is a very bad screen according to all accounts and personal experience.

Could not agree more. This is a much bigger problem than Dell is willing to admit. I have had two SEC3350 screens, they were both horrible, with no luck getting a good screen, I was forced to return a laptop a loved (minus the screen of course). Please Dell, listen to this, JUST USE THE LG SCREENS ONLY. You wil make a lot more business than you think. Even though only the minority of people realize they have a faulty screen, the people that do, don't ever want to do business with Dell ever again. I however seem to be more forgiving. Do not phase out the Samsung screens, just throw them away. Thank you.

The XPS models are Dell's premium line so it should make sense to all that premium components are used. People who buy from the XPS line are more focused on performance and quality as opposed to Inspiron/Vostro customers who are more price conscious.
Dell should only fit the LG screens (WSXGA) to the XPS M1530 and advertise it as a premium screen.

Hi
I'm one of the future owners of the DELL XPS M1530. My notebook is supposed to arrive on February 25th. I must say that it's already been three weeks now since I keep wondering...what will it be for my display? the crappy Samsung or the LG? I think it's not fair to feel like a lousy gambler hoping to be lucky enough to get the big jackpot...and hey, what a jackpot! the one that is actually supposed to be the regular thing for someone paying quite some money to get the XPS... I mean, XPS, just like the other guys said..You would expect more from the XPS line + the xps support!!
I really hope DELL doesn't screw this up for me, and I get that jackpot after all, or else, i will bail from DELL's ship before I even got to truly join it...I've been waiting for so long...and another 3 weeks are to go...

This "idea" should be much more popular on this blog, because the situation is very serious and the people that paid for the "premium xps" only to get the crappy Samsung display should immediately be given the LG with no questions asked!

cheers,
Cristian

Warning to all Dell XPS M1530 prospective customers: If high-end video display quality is important to you, then you should probably consider someting OTHER than the M1530, and perhaps a non-DELL product entirely. Dell doesn't care about this issue and wil do nothing to resolve it. They'd rather you return the laptop than give you a quality screen, and I can only tell you this from personal experience. They know what I need, they won't give it to me.

The SEC3350 is a *horrendous* screen for a laptop that carries this presumably high-end moniker, yet now it seems like Dell is galvanized against getting quality replacements in the field from those who have bought this disappointing unit.

My first on-site replacement was another Samsung (worthless), and a replacement built **laptop** was ANOTHER Samsung 3350 that was actually DARKER than my original. I've now shipped the replacement back to Dell. Unfortunately, I need the laptop and am not in a position to return it, so I'm more or less forced to stare at this sandy backgrain and shadowy corners on this horrendous display while I know others that have received their LG replacement already. This is nothing less than infuriating. All I can do is discourage people from buying this laptop.

The most embarassing part of the whole thing? That my screen on my "high-end" XPS laptop looks worse than my *mother's* Best Buy Gateway closeout laptop she paid barely half as much for. And *I'm* supposedly the family computer expert. I look like an idiot.

Shame on Dell for ignoring the problem. Shame, Shame, Shame!!

Promoted. This is scary. To think, I wanted to get a *premium* product that, according to polls around the internet, ships up to 10 times as many laptops with the crappy SEC3350 screen than LG screens is simply scary. Is this what is to be expected from Dell? I've heard so much about the sketchiness of Dell's quality and reliability, but I've refused to believe that it applied to ALL their systems, especially the XPS systems. Sadly however, I'm starting to think it may be true...

One last possibility that I can think of to defend Dell is that they may have signed a contract with Samsung when they planned the release of the m1530 back in November (27th) of 2007 that forced Dell to continue to use these panels for x length of time. If this is the case, I hope by the time I decide to get a laptop (either late this year or sometime in 2009) they'll be cleared of this contract and use only high quality parts for their PREMIUM product.

From the NotebookReview forum, the polls shows that m1530 buyers are getting 5-1 bad screen (Samsung) to good screen (LG) if they order WXGA (1280x800) or WSXGA+ (1680x1050), but if you get the WSXGA (1440x900) screen, then the odds of getting a good screen (LG) is a healthy 7-1!!

If anyone's looking to get an m1530 right now, I wouldn't say don't get it, but I wouldn't get the WXGA or WSXGA+ screens unless you really want to gamble or call Dell support 5 times to try to get a good screen (after which point, your laptop will probably be destoyed by the technicians replacing the panel 5 times)

In any case, STOP USING SH!TTY-4SS panels for your PREMIUM products, Mr. Dell!! When people buy a PREMIUM product, they EXPECT PREMIUM QUALITY!! Even the 7-1 good screen to bad screen ratio for the WSXGA screens is UNACCEPTABLE for ANY product, ESPECIALLY your premium products!!

Darn it I just got the LCD on my m1530 replaced (dell sent the wrong resolution LCD installed.)
It's a Samsung SEC3350... NO!!! The wrong resolution LCD was a LG and it looked way better...
Man.. the screen looks pretty dark.. it's looks even darker than the Latitude D410 I'm using to type this out...
I'm going to try to get the SEC3550 replaced.....

Another intelligent contribution by winoffice.

The post is about improving screen quality on a laptop and you demote because you think the laptop in question is ugly.

Brilliant...

I got one of the Samsung SEC3350 screens, and it is indeed very mediocre. Not what I would expect in a "premium" laptop.

I have just spent two days with the Dell Technical Support trying to get my screen replaced. A technician called me today to tell me my replacement had arrived, and before scheduling the visit I asked him to check the brand on the LCD and it was another Samsung. I told him to hold off on the visit until I talked to Dell.

I went to the Dell Chat again and explained the situation and demanded that an LG screen be sent or I would not accept another Samsung and I would keep sending them back. At some point the chat session was ended and I got a call from a lady that assured me I would be sent an LG XK309 screen and that they were making an exception for me for being a "valuable Dell customer" and that they were instructed not to send the LGs to customers. Which I think is not fair.

So if anyone has the Samsung screen and is not satisfied, call until you get the LG sent to you.

I also think it is very misleading to have all good M1530s at the Best Buy displays. From what I've read you won't find an M1530 with a Samsung LCD on display. Why? Because it looks awful and Dell knows it.

So Dell, please stop this, and make it up to your customers who bought a quality system.

The Samsung SCC3350 does not even meet the specifications in the XPS M1530 manual.

Viewing angles (L/R/U/D deg)
60/60/40/50

You barely get 30 deg left and right on the Samsung SEC3350. I verified this by taking my M1530 to the Dell kiosk and compared it with the M1530 on demo which has a LG lcd. It's a shame such a great and expensive notebook would be fitted with a LCD that belongs on a sub $500 laptop.

I too can confirm that the Samsung SE 3350 screen is a sub-par screen. Asides from the graininess, every other row of pixels appears to be slightly darker (seen best on non pure white/black images).

I had almost the exact same issue with an Apple PowerBook over 2 years ago, and they replaced the screen with a quality screen. For what I paid for this laptop, I expected a way higher quality screen.

I get my new M1530 with the WSXGA+ screen the first week of may. Sure hope that it will be fitted with a LG screen.

I just got my M1530 this week. I can also confirm that Dell is still using these horrible Samsung WSXGA+ screens. You need to be looking at the screen dead center to get the full brightness. If you shift your head even 1 inch, certain areas of the screen will appear darker. The image is certainly sharp enough, but there is like a silvery/sparkle to the entire screen, especially when viewing lighter web pages. This type of thing DOES NOT occur on other laptops I have seen from Toshiba, Gateway, HP and others. I have tried several times to get a replacement with another screen manufacturer, but Dell's support representives will do absolutely nothing about it. They sent out a replacement Samsung screen which I did not want. They then closed my service case, I called Dell about this and they told me I will not get to choose which screen I get and that I can return the laptop for a refund. And the frustrating thing is that there are a fair amount of people who have gotten their screens replaced with LG Phillips or even come that way with new systems. With arrogant customer service like this, it's no wonder HP has overtaken Dell as the number one computer seller.

I received a M1530 at the beginning of April. It came with a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) LCD. This screen also was not sharp. I also had a very narrow usable left to right viewing angle. I found a video that comes with Vista called "Bear". Run on this screen, the bear fur was obviously blurry. I played this on other Best Buy laptop displays (including Dell's) and my own Inspiron 1505 (WSXGA+ (1680x1050) LCD). All the other displays showed the video what I would call sharp to very sharp. I returned my M1530. Customer service (my sales person) was very helpful and cooperative. My original M1530 is being replaced by an M1530 with WXGA+ (1440x900). I was assured that all of the WXGA+ screens were made by LG. Got my fingers crossed.

I received my M1530 two days ago. After having such high hopes for this laptop, I was totally underwhelmed when I turned it on for the first time. I knew it couldn't be right and about 30 seconds of googling proved me right. I cannot believe Dell would ship such a horrible display on what I would consider a flagship product. I'm giving them one shot to fix it and after that I'm going to do everything I can to get my $1500 back. It's such a tragedy when accounting has more power than quality assurance.

pjeff, I demoted not because it is ugly, but because marcusesq claimed the opposite, that it is "this good". Had he omitted that, I would have promoted.

Marcusesq did not comment on the aesthetics of the computer. He merely stated it was a good laptop let down by poor screen quality. YOU brought up the looks and then demoted. This is continuing to be a serious issue for many owners as you can see and you demoting a worthwhile idea for childish reasons like that helps no one and achieves nothing. If you have something worthwhile to contribute to a forum by all means join in, if not, in future please stay away.
