Let Us Build A PC Without Microsoft Works or Office!

1990 points posted to Software by aikiwolfie 12/22/07

Dell I have absolutely no need for Microsoft Works 8.0. Especially on a PC designed for multimedia entertainment! Please give me the option of having a PC without any office software at all.

Please SIMPLIFY MY IT experience by giving me the opportunity to avoid the uninstall process.

You can remove it while your building the pc.

No I can't. At least not on the UK site.

It’s probably cheaper for you fly to the US and buy a notebook without works 8 anyway. With our lower prices combined with a sweet exchange rate you'd probably make out with a sweet notebook and a nice Holiday. FYI it’s no longer called the dollar, it called the New American Peso.

But then I don't get a UK battery charger. Besides, it wasn't a notebook anyway.

"Please give me the option of having a PC without any office software at all."

You mean you already have a cracked Office DVD?

LOL ssssssh! Cosh you'll give the game away! No actually I was thinking about building a PVR and using one of those little slim 530s desktops as a base unit. Dell are even happy enough to squish a TV card in there.

Users should be given options for productivity software like something similar to this:

  • Microsoft Office Standard 2007
  • Microsoft Office Small Business 2007
  • Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007
  • Microsoft Office Standard 2003
  • Microsoft Office Small Business 2003
  • Microsoft Office Professional 2003
  • No office/productivity software installed (The option that this idea asks for)

I do not use Microsoft Works anyway, so I

either select one of the Microsoft Office options with the PC, or alternitavely,
I do not select any of the Microsoft Office options but rather obtain the Microsoft Office software myself.

It's sort of implemented but not on every line or selection of system. I noticed when building for certain systems you can choose "No productivity software" on others, you have to Get at least works. I remembered thinking it was odd but I just overlooked it since I actually wanted an office suite.

Well I'm going to check out the rest of the Home/Office range in the UK site. I can't remember ever seeing an option not to have either Office or Works installed. Works 8.0 is always the default.

I checked again and it seems the No office or works software option is specific to only certain product lines and segments on the UK site. For example. I was specing out a Latitude D530 and I got the option to select "Not Included". However an inspiron spec'd under the small business segment did not give the option.

I was looking under the home section. Dell really needs to be more consistent.

The US site needs to be more consistant, same thing here aikiwolfie.

Well if the business channels offer the option we're looking for and the home channel doesn't then it would seem Dell doesn't think the opinion of general consumers matters. It would seem Dell thinks consumers can be bullied and pushed around. I have a new idea to post it'll likely be my last until this idea is full implemented across all channels.

for me, it depends on the mood the computer is in. sometimes it goes easy, other times it's a pain

I'd pay $5 to have notepad.exe made my default text app if they want to charge for something and not include the "bloat".

Why should i be uninstalling something I didn't even want in the first place? Not every PC needs a full blown Office suit.

I am useing Office 2003. I use most of the features at different times. Many people just want a word program for letter writing and emailing.

On a PVR you don't need Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint or any other office productivity software. Notepad does just fine for reading readme.txt.

I just ran into this problem for a system I ordered yesterday. How lame is this? I do NOT want to have to uninstall Works. And, obviously, my company already has our 2003 licenses, so why can't I just get the system without the fluff!

Please, vote for this idea:

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

If more people knew OpenOffice.org, they wouldn't require proprietary softwares which cost hundreds of dollars. And if people paid less for software, they could invest in hardware and services.

obvio.capitao ... I think you're missing the point here. The whole point of this idea is that not everybody needs a full office productivity suit on their PC. So we want the choice to have or not to have that software pre-installed.

LOL I should hope so! It's my idea :op
