Unmerge the totally different Ideas that got merged.

170 points posted to IdeaStorm by jmxz 12/15/07

Two *totally* different Ideas were merged into this idea here

Uh, why was this idea (of a retail / packaged version of Ubuntu being placed in the accessories part of Dell's web site just like Vista is) merged into an idea asking for links to Ubuntu "SYSTEMS" that Dell sells (presumably talking about pre-installed systems).

One comes with a computer.
The other doesn't come with a computer.

One is an idea to make something you're already offering more visible.
The other is to offer something you're not offering at all now.

The two Ideas seem entirely separate.

@dell_admin1: [or others] -- can these Ideas be un-merged?

I think someone went on a major merg-bender. As a mod myself I can testify merging is addictive and only leads to an ever decreasing downward spiral of merging and more merging until one day you make an uber-merg and everything is one thread. Be one with IdeaStorm my children and your ideas will also be one and many.

They don't have the ability to unmerge anything. My advice is just yell at the the new mods until they get too frightened to merge anything ever again.

Even on the vastly superior vBulletin forum software un-merging or splitting is a pain in the posterior. I doubt CrapForce can handle it.

I now hate Dell.

"They don't have the ability to unmerge anything. "

Sure they do. They can re-data-enter the erroneously merged ideas; then re-data-enter the comments; then add a comment saying that the Idea is not really theirs, but whomever the merged Idea belonged to.

Sure, it doesn't the the vote-count right; And sure the Idea ID and URL will have changed.

But at least the Idea (which IMHO was a very good one) isn't simply lost.

yes they should do that, because I hate them now.

All they have to do is fix the pointers in the database. It's all just data and data can be manipulated.

But there's some suspicion that Dell doesn't have access to the database except through some limited interface provided by salesforce. Otherwise there are quite a few improvements it seems Dell could have made.

They don't have access to their own forum database? That's just stupid! Who would be so dumb as to buy into such a thing? Full free ranging access to servers and their contents has been a feature on web hosting services for like the past decade!

It's true though - they really don't have access to their database.

Well that's just plain stupid. Does it mean that salesfarce actually own the contents of the database, that is, our ideas and comments?

I hate salesfarce.com too, by the way.

Having said that, somebody must have done something clever to the database recently, because this idea has been reassigned from "cdietz" to "dell_admin1": Add User-Generated Content to your StudioDell site. In doing so of course, they managed to break the stats on both accounts: [1], [2].

That is too funny. I guess it may be because I complained about her dupe accounts. So instead of loosing points and her idea she abused her admin privileges to change the name. Hmm, talk about interfering with the function of IdeaStorm. Should we send her a warning or just ban her? :D

Also funny that she went for keeping the basically anon/pseudonym-based account.

Heck, perhaps I'll create a dup account called "ideastorm_user_9612234" and ask that all my ideas get merged into that one; just to show Dell how impersonal "dell_adminX" comes across.

Since the cdeitz account was created first it should bee the one to stay anyway. dell_admin1 is the dupe account. I commented on the idea for giggles.

Where did my post go? I made a post after cosh and it's gone?

Would it have been considered abuse and deleted?

I don't think so. I also found one of my posts in the wrong thread the other day. I thought I'd just been stupid and posted in the wrong place.

All I said in reply to cosh was that the database is just data and data can be manipulated. They just need to fix the pointers to point to the right place.

Well it was something like that. Just a line or two. Nothing bad at all.

Perhaps they just wanted to give you guys an existence proof that they can indeed access their database data directly?

How about idea "buckets" that display total, consolidated point counts?!*
