XPS gaming desktops should use standard power plug

320 points posted to XPS products by spacegy4 11/29/07

I have heard people gripe about the nonstandard power plug that is used on the higher end of the XPS high performance desktops. If they switched to using a power supply with a standard power plug they could reduce the risk of people not being able to use their computer if they lost the plug.

Your are referring to the 700 series systems. I expect the power cable is different is because of the large power supply, most systems have 450watt or smaller power supplies, the 700series offers 750 and 1k watt power supplies. I think Dell uses a different power cable for safety reasons, you wouldn't want to push that much current through a standard power cable.

If I am spending $2k+ (they max around $5k) on a PC, i will not be loosing a power cable. and in the off chance i lost the power cable I can easily afford to buy a new one.

Look at these power supplies that are 1200

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010320058+113143...< all use the standard power cable

The different cable isnt needed and is just a hassle.

you also dont understand about how power works.

The same current is always traveling through the wire from the outlet.
The power supply converts it which means that a different cable is not neccesary because nothing changes in the electricity in the wire when you use a bigger power supply

spacegy4 ,

You right that there are other power supplies in the 1k watt range that take standard cables, looked at your link and antec.. I have confirmed only Dell 1k power supplies use a special cable. I dont know what the rating is on a standard power cable from Dell, from HP, from a cheap monitor, etc are and they may differ from manufacturer. Imagine a house burning down after a cheap monitor cable is connected to a 1k power supply, could be worse than exploding laptop batteries.

"you also dont understand about how power works." *** current is based on device load, voltage doesn't change from the wall to the input of power supply - refer to your household circuit breakers or cars fuses, they are rated in amps (aka electrical current).

Yes but my post has nothing to do with using a crappy cable.

I would assume that people would use a decent quality standard power cable.

most users think if it fits it must be okay.
