The Linux Foundation Desktop Survey is IN ...

Linux is a desktop creature

"DESPITE a lack of enthusiasm from Linux geeks for sticking their cherished Open Sauce software on the desktop, it seems that it is in this area that the OS is stealing ground from Microsoft." ****

Vista vs. Desktop Linux: One Year In

"Lest you think this is just a case of another Linux supporter throwing brickbats at Vista, I ask you to consider for a moment that my colleague Joe Wilcox of Microsoft-Watch found that resellers are still installing three copies of XP on PCs for every one of Vista.

Forrester Calls Desktop Linux a Credible Threat to Windows

Linux is becoming a credible threat to Windows on the desktop, and will grow over the next year as its distributors continue to work hard at making it an enterprise-class offering, research group Forrester predicts.

LOL @ winoffice. Dude what are you so afraid of? Windows isn't going away. Not for a long time. It's just time to make room for another OS. The more desktop OSs there are, the greater the need for open standards like ODF. Meaning you win either way. You win because you won't be locked in and can choose to move if you want to and you win because you can share documents with even more people.

Look at it this way. Linux and the Mac take about 10% to 20% of the web browser market share between them. What business out there can afford to turn away 10% to 20% of there potential customers? More pressure on Microsoft to adopt open standards without bastardizing them is good for business because web sites will no longer be designed purely for Microsoft IE.

I've included the Mac because it's relevant and Safari uses the same HTML render engine as KDE.

LoL at Open Sauce software. But seriously, you Linux fanboys are just like Democrats. You talk and talk and talk about worthless stuff. Before anyone tries to be smart, yes the Democrats speak about important things, but they obviously aren't very important to themselves, for the minute they are elected they always completely forget about what they were saying to get people to vote for them and start focusing on themselves. You linux fanboys talk about something that is worthless to begin with. it never failes to amaze me how so many people can be so stupid to go raving about an operating system that has virtually no support for anything important. And once again before someone tries to be smart, I'm talking about Linux, NOT Windows Vista, which happens to be a very stable and very promising OS.

maverick4ever: "But seriously, you Linux fanboys are just like Democrats."

Actually, Republicans generally do the same as Democrats: both parties promise to help the people, but then pass laws that are in their favor instead of that of the people.

About Democrats, I just thought that when it comes to computers, Liberals = Linux supporters, Conservatives = Windows supporters, just like with politics: Liberals = Democrats, Conservatives = Republicans. Just like politics, Linux supporters always throw brickbats at Windows even when unjustified, and sometimes Windows supporters do likewise with Linux, but far less often.

Actually I think that the more accurate stereotyping is Liberals=MacUsers, Conservatives=WindowsUsers and Independents=LinuxUsers. <smiley>

Personally I couldn't give a toss about American politics. I'm not American. This amazing World Wide Web thing actually spans the globe. They even have access in deepest darkest Africa these days. The natives even know how to use it.

So you are suggesting that Dell advertise an OS for which it does not even provide support????
aikiwolfie
11/28/07
You mean Ubuntu? Dell does provide support for Ubuntu. They write drivers, re-spun the entire Ubuntu ISO to make it work with some laptops and contract Canonical to provide user support. Nothing wrong with that. It's the same set up when you call an overseas call center for Windows help.

winoffice, what on earth do you mean by saying that liberals=republicans, conservatives=democrats? You clearly have no conception about politics...
winoffice
12/02/07
Well, conservatives (defintion http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/conservative) is defined as "tending to oppose change". And many Windows fans dislike Linux (this is the "change") and do not change to Linux. And, liberals (definition http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/liberal) is defined as "not limited to or by established, traditional...views". Well many Linux fans do not seem limited to or by any view whatsoever (except by the view that Windows is bad, but I do not agree with them here). Also, Republicans are generally regarded as conservatives, while Democrats are generally regarded as liberals.
aikiwolfie
12/02/07
Does anybody care? I just want Ubuntu on a decent system. matt_d asked in another thread what i thought a "decent" system was. I posted a minimum spec using Dells own on-line configuration tool. So they have no excuses really. I have spoken! LOL!
ubondell
12/02/07
@aikiwolfie - I wouldn't brag about the Dell Ubuntu ISO. For some foolish reason they remove Wine and the OpenOffice suite IIRC. Their nominal excuse is to make room for all the Dell Linux drivers (ha!) How about 2 CDs or one DVD?
aikiwolfie
12/02/07
They did what? Not a huge problem since they can be installed from the official Ubuntu repositories, But that's just a load of crud. The Ubuntu ISO is distributed on CD. Why couldn't they do a DVD instead? But the fact remains they still put the effort in to make it work.

I wanted to be sure that I could find the sources of that info, rather than letting my comments pass as rumor.

The "No Wine" is from"http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS5448893661.html"
The "No OpenOffice" is from Dell's own site "http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.04"

Ubuntu is the rising star of the OS world at the moment. Canonical are pushing it really hard and the pace of development is awesome. Hardy Heron has already gone into alpha1 release for testing after only a month of development! To be fair there has been a huge merge from Debian. But a MONTH! I need to go lie down.

more on IBM and Ubuntu... (same 'story', different report, more info)

Time to swap out Exchange and MS Office???

IBM`s New Linux-Based Notes and Symphony Office

IBM opens the door for Linux-based servers and desktops with a new Lotus Notes and Symphony bundle for SUSE, Red Hat and Ubuntu Linux.

IBM has seen the future, and in its vision, Linux-based servers and desktops will be powering tomorrow's office with Lotus Notes and Symphony in what it calls an open collaboration client solution. ****

IBM sees the future... does Dell, instead, see the past????

Of course, although it may be valid as a generalization, it ALSO trips over definitions of "liberal" and "conservative"... some would contend that "liberal", especially, is generally misused today and bears little resemblance to what "liberal" was only a few decades ago. (SOME of us are old enough to remember!)

For my part, labels are pretty much useless and both parties in the U.S. are as well... the end result with either seems to me to be pretty much disaster...

Cloud thingy what's it is the defining moment? I would say the defining moment was OLPC as it made people who knew nothing about Linux sit up and pay attention as ordinary news sites explained exactly how such an underpowered system could deliver full web content, via Wi-Fi no less, and do all the normal day to day office productivity stuff people in the technologically advanced western world are used to. But use what is in comparison a gas guzzler of a notebook to do it with. The OLPC could even be wound up. Then along came stories about the Eee PC. The quirky ultra portable designed by Asus with it's own Linux OS and of course Dell was offering Ubuntu. All be rather shyly.

Windows is caught between Mac and Linux

For the first time in ages, the sale of new PCs with Windows as a percentage of the PC market is declining sharply. The new winner is the Mac, but, while no one does a good job of tracking the still-new, pre-installed Linux desktop market, it's also clear that Linux is finally making impressive inroads into Windows' once unchallenged market share.
