IdeaStorm: Search is majorly busted again. Try searching for "Give us our Points Back" and I get 211 pages of finds. You got to be kidding me right.

The search is more broken than it was when it didn't exist. Can you just stick a google search button with the site as the preferred search site like everyone else does and call it a day?

(aside: Well I better not say what it is but for the smart kids I'm moving on to a new section)

I believe you. It doesn't work nearly as good as a search engine should. it also helps if you put the search in quotes in the box, though.

The Search definitely needs to be redesigned. It does not do anything.

@dwood - the quotes don't do anything for IdeaStorm's search. They haven't got the faintest idea how to make a search engine.
premcv
11/21/07
Or they don't want to. Maybe they are waiting to integrate the entire Dell search and then put that search gadget on here. I don't know!
dwood
11/21/07
They should just let Clusty.com make an integrated search engine for their site. (my replacement for Google)

Not sure what to make of this new version yet.

Another bug. When we vote, it takes a long time for it to actually show the plus 10 or minus 10. Some times I have to click twice to get it to register.
aikiwolfie
11/23/07
I think that's actually more to do with the server load or your connection speed SB. I get the same thing sometimes and other times it's fine.
sugarbear
11/23/07
It might be, Everything else was loading at the normal speed on this site, but the voting. But we have been having high winds and thunderstorms. That may have something to do with it to.

IdeaStorm is slow on 6mbps? Are you using IE per chance?
sugarbear
11/23/07
I use IE7 and it`s not slow.
aikiwolfie
11/23/07
It's not slow with everybody but it does have a tendency to be slow. I think it might be the lookup for the fishing list that slows it down.
jervis961
11/23/07
Using IE7 or Opera and the site is bogging down at times. Voting is delayed as well.
aikiwolfie
11/23/07
Sounds like it's the site then.
jervis961
11/23/07
Actually I just realized I hadn't tried Opera since the site upgrade. Opera is like lightning compared to IE7.
aikiwolfie
11/24/07
It all works fine for me in Firefox + Ubuntu.
jervis961
11/24/07
Faster in Opera but the site doesn't fully support it as the black banner is huge in Opera. Using either program the voting is still slow as heck.

Voting is fine for me.

Come on MODS, what the ... is going on, you can't just stick a Google search aimed at the site to get it fixed? Google is your supposed partner, partner with your company! Just use their search thingy for the site specific searches, if you run the search I list in the idea you'll see how much your search is the worse on the internet. You aren't at least embarrassed to have such a bad search? You know that weak feature shows Dell's quality of what they provide. If you don't improve it soon it will only show Dell thinks that kind of a bad search feature on your site is just the same quality we should expect from Dell.

Hows that?
cosh
11/24/07
This is funny: Salesfarce customers are asking for the same thing on their own Ideas Exchange: http://ideas.salesforce.com/article/show/68893/

Google are also a strategic partner of Salesfarce themselves. And they still flog us off with this sucky search.

For the guys that make the site, its pretty crappy.
jorge
11/24/07
pretty crappy? More like totally crappy, (I meant to say something harsher but...)

It just continues to re-enforce to me that Dell could give a $&|^ about IdeaStorm.
jervis961
11/24/07
I don't think they even give that much. :D
aikiwolfie
11/24/07
LOL. I didn't think it was possible. They made the site look good and managed to break something else in the process. I've seen duplicate threads, posts and search doesn't work. For some people the site is running like an iBitch and voting is too slow and comments aren't updating properly.

The funny thing is although a lot of people wanted a more consistent look to Dells community forums. IdeaStorm looked fine. It need a polishing certainly but it did the job. There's just no point in making it look pretty if it doesn't work.

SalesForce forum software is pants. DA1 please come to the rescue. Find something else. Anything else!!!

Has anyone SEEN Dell_admin1 lately? She hasn't abandoned us again has she? :(
jervis961
11/24/07
She sent me an email last weekend when I put all the ideas in delete requests. I sent her a reply but haven't heard anything since. I think she was off most of the week for the holiday. We'll have to wait for Monday to see what is going on. #12 is merging things without notification so I'm sure there will be complaints from somebody. I was glad to see my idea get merged with badbloods and if he/she is feeling frisky I have a slew of others in the delete requests still. :)
natalie_d
11/24/07
@cosh, no, she hasn't abandoned all of you. :-) I'm on though, if you need anything.

@jervis961, I did send out notifications of mergings, sorry if you didn't get them. :-( Happy to hear you were ok with merging yours and badblood's. Let us know if you find any others that look like duplicates.
cosh

"I'm on though, if you need anything."

What we need is more interaction from Dell. We need them to talk to us more. We need them to explain why popular and frequently repeated ideas are ignored and why they don't listen to good suggestions.
jervis961
11/24/07
I had sent DA1 an email saying if she found any that they could be merged into to feel free or delete them. They've been there about a week now. I just wish we could recommend merges for our own ideas since I have some that could be consolidated into one.
jervis961
11/24/07
Quick somebody throw some water on cosh before he spontaniously combusts. :)
I sense a meltdown in progress, trust me I"ve had enough of them on this site to spot one in the making.
natalie_d
11/24/07
@cosh, I will be sure to share your comment about wanting more interaction from Dell and more updates on the ideas posted with the other admins. Great suggestion. Keep them coming.

@jervis961, all of you being able to recommend merges for your own ideas is also a GREAT idea. I imagine that would be very helpful. I will also share this with the other admins. Thank you. Let me know if you think of anything else you would find helpful.

Can I get controlling shares in the company? :D

Couldn't pass up a good joke.

These aren't new ideas #12 they know about them . It usually takes a member to meltdown on the site before Dell interaction improves temporarily. (I'm the meltdown champion)
natalie_d
11/24/07
@jervis961, Good joke. :-) And please, NO meltdowns!! LOL!! :p We're here and we're listenning...sometimes things just take a little time.
cosh
11/24/07
@dell_admin12, it's not funny. I'll second what jervis said about the meltdowns being the only way to get sustained interaction. There's just so little communication with Dell. The people who should be reading and learning from the ideas are just never seeing them. And then there's all these ideas that are supposedly "under review" - when they're absolutely not, and it's a complete lie.
jervis961
11/24/07
I know that and try to be patient but they really do need to participate more. We have been asking since the start of the site 8 months ago. People on the site have what has been called by many "IdeaStorm Bi-Polar disorder". We can be happy about things for a while but eventually meltdowns happen when people become frustrated due to: lack of information, lack of participation or misunderstandings on the site. After a couple of days (and a little therapy) things return to near normal but the next meltdown comes quicker each time. We could discuss problems with the site, Dell's lack of action, Dell in general for days if Dell would only speak to us. Anyway no meltdown here (I'm getting better at controlling myself) but they need to get a move on. It has been nice having you on site this weekend. DA1 used to interact more like you but she has done less lately for good reasons.
natalie_d
11/24/07
@jervis961, Thank you! I have enjoyed being on this weekend as well and getting to know some of you and read all of your great ideas.

@cosh & @jervis961, I know it can be frustrating at times and you wonder if we (Dell) are listenning or even passing the ideas on to the right folks in Dell or if folks in Dell are reading, but I assure you, they are, and admin1 and the others have done a fantastic job working with Dell employees throughout the company to share your ideas. The admins are huge advocates for all of these ideas and when they're not on here, they're sharing your ideas and trying to get changes made. Sometimes the changes just take a lot of time. I can't stress that enough. We really do appreciate your patience. :-)

Thanks to all of you and your ideas, good things are starting to happen. You are helping to define the future of this company and are inspiring employees everyday to do better and do more! I know you can't always see it, but it's happenning. Thank you to all of you!

It`s pretty bad when Saleforce`s forum is posting about the same search problems we have. I wouldn`lt want to buy it. Maybe they hired some trainee out of a two year college to write their code.

@dell_admin12, that would be alright if I believed a word of it. I mean look at this sort of thing: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/72976. How much do people have to sit there and shout among themselves before they'll get just 1 comment from someone even vaguely connected with Dell?
jervis961

How about an employee with the first idea on the site that still hasn't had a status tag or even a comment from another employee?

Wait the #$#$@ minute. I am marked for abuse yet a MOD is here chatting! Yet another mod that is pretending to be a poster/chatter? And on my IDEA! How is a chat session on my idea relevant to Dell? You better clean up your mess and step a side. cosh and jervis961 want more Dell interaction from people who can affect an idea not a mod who is just patting them on the back and baby sitting till who knows when. You have a job to do and its to Moderate the site, you should be as transparent as the color clear, but it seems you've fallen for the oldest trick on IdeaStorm, please go read the idea with the FAQ for Mods, use your search feature to find it, that will keep you busy. You only get one warn from me.

@dell_admin12 - I see you've encountered jorge and taken a verbal bashing from him. That's an important step in becoming an IdeaStorm moderator - it's like an initiation ritual. Dell_admin1 always thought it was personal though.

The nerve of 12 to think she's allowed to chat on here, and on my idea! I still blame bad training and not knowing what the job requires. From my stand point they're pillaging the local Baby Sitters club for Mods.

DA12`s alright in my book. The admin`s have every bit as much right as we do to chat on here.
jorge
11/25/07
Still she should be chatting with you on your idea not mine, especially when there's an idea on the subject you're on. Its a definite off topic clause hit, as usual the ideas asking for that are lying dormant and this idea asking for a search feature is still broken. Maybe some effort on fixing things is in order especially something to blatantly broken as the search feature.
jervis961
11/25/07
Well I do apologize for chatting in your idea but it is hard enough to get one of them to talk never mind switch to a different idea to do it.

Yet another meltdown. I had to take a break from ideastorm or ida not made it through the holiday.
jorge
11/25/07
Well as usual we were doing fine without their totally un-helpful comments which only fan flames of discontent and show us there is really nobody at Dell on here.
jorge
11/25/07
Forgot, @jervis961, the discussions between us idea posters is fine its the totally un-helpful and consolation comments from the mods that is un-wanted here.

@dwood: under review is just another word for in the pigeon hole. 2nd Part, its not a melt down, its a roar or complaint for sure though.

@aikiwolfie: ideastorm is for us to post and discuss not a mod to just troll in when they're bored.
aikiwolfie
11/25/07
jorge calm down. The mod wasn't trolling. The mod was being friendly. So far as we know #12 is here part-time or something like that. DA1 is primarily responsible. She seems to have other duties to attend to as well. Take a breather it's a web forum. Not the UN.

Personally I prefer the mods to be friendly and chat to folks occasionally. I'm a volunteer mod on another forum. I wouldn't do it if I couldn't join in.
jervis961
11/26/07
I haven't found a forum yet where the mods DON'T chime in with a personal comment. Mods are usually just as passionate about a subject as the regular posters. Some mods started off as a regular and then get bumped up to being a mod. I do see what jorge means by the consolation comments though. Some people have become jaded when it comes to these kind of comments but I do find #12 to be sincere.
cosh
11/26/07
jorge please try not to scare the mods away, they're a critically endangered species. They're very rarely seen in the wild any more, and to get one to listen to us, even if just for a few minutes, was a real photo opportunity.

Least it prevented me from a meltdown, for a couple of days.
dwood
11/26/07
Yea! Lack of (active) feedback from (real) higherups is kind of discouraging. Im here just because I find the community to be really nice. Thats why Dell needs a forums, not just an Ideastorm where we have to stay on topic or we violate TOU.

The Dell forums are worse, I've seen informative posts removed for who knows what reasons. I saved several links and go back to find them no longer there.

"Crikey!" was one of many catch phrases Steve Irwin had. And yes that sentence is typical of the things he'd say.

Guess what folks! If you search for "Give us our Points Back" in the search box at the top of the page, it returns this idea. Is that a good thing? Well at first you have to say, yea, it works! Then you try to search for any other random idea and guess what? You get the whole database of ideas!

Funny Dell, adding a search hash for just my case, har har har... now how about a hash for all the ideas and new ones as well, it seems somebody can create the hash so get them to do the same for the rest, just follow the steps for my case then just add the text from any other idea. ... errr.....
