Operating Room PCs

-120 points posted to Desktops, New Product Ideas by harleyman5 11/20/07

I like the new Dell all-in-one PC. Now what is needed is a simplified, less-expensive version for use in hospital settings such as operating rooms. Wall-mounted with flip-down keyboard shelves, these PCs would not take up valuable floor space in an already overcrowded OR. Two gigs of RAM, a small hard-drive, multi-format optical drive (CD/DVD), Windows OS, and network ready would be all that's needed. These PCs could also be used in Post-Anesthesia Recovery Rooms, Cath Labs, etc. You already have a contract with HCA (the largest hospital corporation in the world) so why not take the next step and offer a truly useful solution for a problem all hospitals are currently experiencing.

I don't want my Doctor surfing the porn sites while cutting at me. I don't see a need in the OR for a computer, recovery maybe but not the OR. Who wants blood trapped in the keyboard? :)

Really though it would be hard to keep a sterile environment with a computer in the room where everyone is touching it and the fan is blowing dust around.

LOL! Really now, jervis!

- Thank you for calling Tech Support. How can I help you?
- Ummm, well, I spilt blood on my keyboard and this happened early morning I couldn't call in as I was in the OR. But now, the keyboard just won't work. I have an important operation coming up, so I need a new keyboard.
- WOW, Blood?

That will be scary and hilarious.

I think you need to check out OR in the hospitals, Most have a computer in them now. All I have seen have a cover over the keyboard.

Yes, I've seen them. Been in one a few years ago. Most OT instruments are computer-controlled, one of my doctor told me.

my wife was a surgical tech 10 years ago when they didn't really have them in the OR. I shouldn't let my itchy voting finger take contol so often. =D
Yet another argument for allowing us to change our vote. maybe Dell could make a more OR friendly keyboard and mouse which is my main concern.

Most of the time all that PC's are used for in the OR anyway is so the surgeon can view MRI's/CAT's more easily with DICOM viewer or similar -- and most of the doc's I deal with generally don't trust PC's anyway and always have a hard copy transparency version of the scan's on hand just in case anyway (actually, several I know prefer the old style transparencies anyway because they can more easily overlay two or three of them at one time by simply stacking them and holding them up to the light -- which is very good for comparing scans from two different dates [i.e. to see tumor growth] or to stack scans of multiple "slices" to get a better feel for the aggregate volume/depth of a feature/tumor).

That's what I thought so too, or an OT Technician.

They need PCs in the recovery area so I can check my email, blog about the surgery, etc..

Darned, the nurses never let me check my email. Lucky you. : )
