No more integrated graphics on desktops

-30 points posted to Desktops, Inspiron products, XPS products, Vostro products, Precision Workstations by helmecj01 11/17/07

It would be nice if Dell stop selling the integrated graphics on desktops
The integrated graphics is not very good for games and Windows vista need a very powerful graphics card use the 3D flip,Aero Glass in Windows vista.

I not like the integrated graphics on desktops

The integrated graphics is ok for server, which not need a power to make graphics picture for 3D

Explain why you would want this please.

You do know that you can upgrade right? You don't have to buy a desktop with an integrated graphic card if you don't want to. Integrated graphics is a good low price alternative to those who use their computers for email, web surfing and other productivity software uses. I don't understand why you would want to do away with it.

Humm... misread before voting, thought it was laptops. I guess some cheap-o's use it especially for those who buy computers for their office people, no need to have an Nvidia 8800 bla bla for them if they're just work processing all day.

Anyhoo.

I think this is more a case of someone buying the wrong system for their needs. I'm not a fan of integrated graphics but they do serve a purpose in the world. Any decent system from Dell meant for gaming will have decent graphics. If you want to play games buy a machine designed for games.

I think this person has a different native laguage than English?

Integrated graphics on a mobo is a waste of space.

Obviously he is using Vista, Hopefully he has enough ram to run any of it.

It depends on what the system is being used for. If it's for a secretary to do some word processing then it's a decent enough choice. On the other hand if it's for games then it's the wrong choice.

Clearly helmec has made the wrong choice. I'm no fan of integrated anything. I think everything should be modular. But then again I do like to experiment and do things that require more grunt.

Actually my inspiron 6000 runs vista aero using the ATI x300 card which is pretty crappy. My next laptop will have a better video card so I can do my home video editing a bit faster.

NO I am not used windows Vista

My computer is on Windows XP Home SP 2
Dell Dimension 1100
512 MB of Ram
Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 256MB
Intel Celeron CPU 2.53GHz
aikiwolfie

That's a seriously crap spec. If you're not using Vista how are you able to get Aero Glass working? Or is Vista something you aspire to get working with your system?

Looking at the spec I wouldn't even try it. Buy a new PC and save yourself some heartache and many headaches.

hi aikiwolfie
I am not going put windows Vista on it but I am keeping Windows xp for Dell Dimension 1100

I just google the picture

yeah, the integrated is a piece of crap.

Hi dwood
I got the Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 256MB for my game Colin McRae Rally 04 and the integrated crap is disabled.

I would love to have them integrated ones disabled and not present at all.

I don't see any reason to prevent someone from getting the option of integrated if they want it. I'm sure most of us prefer to have video cards, but integrated works and if you don't need more powerful graphics then I don't see why you should be forced to buy more powerful graphics cards.
dwood
11/19/07
Just dont make integrated a mandatory option.
premcv
11/19/07
Yep! Simple as that!
dwood

Really? do you believe that?

Vista works just fine on an integrated graphics card of the level of the Intel Graphics Card 950 series or better which is what all of the products on the market are currently, if not better.

I have the same graphics chipset in my Latitude D-620 and it allows me to run everything just fine with Vista Enterprise. I don't notice any transition effect delays or lag of any kind compared to my home Desktop which has Vista Ultimate and an 8800GT graphics card.

Mandatory Option? Everything should be a Mandatory Option! Its Forced Feature what you don't want.

One thing I've never understood is why systems whit integrated graphics and sound are sold with a tower case? What's the point in that? Would be better to make it look nicer and sell it as a slimline model. Then there's an advantage to having graphics and sound integrated.
dwood
11/20/07
I know what you mean. but Sound being integrated sounds much, much more reasonable than graphics being integrated
jervis961
11/20/07
No! Sound is important too.
dwood
11/20/07
not as important. you cant go as far in audio quality as you can with video.
aikiwolfie
11/21/07
dwood there is a world of difference between a Sound Blaster X-fi and anything else that gets used for integrated sound. Like say the Sigmatel chip set that comes with the XPS 700.
dwood
11/21/07
I never notice any. Having better speakers might help too, though.

LOL take the cotton wool out of your ears!
dwood
11/21/07
cotton wool?
aikiwolfie
11/22/07
Yeah so you can hear the difference between a quality sound card and a generic sound card.

dwood, it`s a saying. Some people say cotton and others say cotton wool. In other words, clean out the ears.

I have a Dimension E310. When I got the computer I wasn't into virtual world but now I am and have had problems with the integrated
graphics. I called support but the guy was really hard to understand and didn't seem to know the answer to my question which is this:
Is it possible to upgrade the graphics? And, if so, what is the best graphic card for this machine? If anyone has an answer I would very much
appreciate it.
aikiwolfie
11/23/07
LOL @ SB the translator :op

@katie0814: Yes you can upgrade the graphics. Normally that involves disabling the integrated graphics in the systems BIOS and installing the new card. It's a very simple and easy procedure to carry out.

As for what best. Depends on your budget and what you already have. What you system configuration is. A simple rule of thumb is to go for the most expensive card you can afford as these are generally the newer models. But you need to be careful you don't end up with something that's incompatible with your PC. For example there would be little point in buying the latest PCIex16 card for an old PC with an AGP slot.

This is what my control panel says about my machine:
Dell Dimension DV051
INTEL (R)
PENT (R) 4CPU 2.80GH
2.79GHz 0.99 GB RAM
INTEL (R) GMA DRIVER
To say I am a computer dummy is putting it mildly.
I've been trying to find out what is compatible but the techie speak left me dazed and confused.
My budget would be up to $75.
The reason I want a new card is for Second Life (don't laugh!) which I run on a DSL modem.
I do appreciate any and all feedback.
aikiwolfie
11/23/07
I don't seem to be able to find any direct reference to a Dell Dimension DV051. Which means I can't be sure I'm looking at the proper manual. I did find some reference to a Dell Dimension 3100 having a DV051motherboard. Maybe one of the regular Dell folks that post here can help.

In the mean time you could post this problem on Dell Forums where you might get a better response. Or you might not. A few folks seem to be having problems finding the manual for the DV051.
katie0814
11/23/07
OK, thank you.
dwood
11/25/07
Id save money and wait. $75 would not bring you up to spec.to get a good card, you need at least $200 (may I suggest teh nvidia 7800-7950?)
aikiwolfie
11/25/07
I'm not sure her PC even has a PCIe x16 slot dwood. I think a new PC is in order.

hm. .99 GB of ram lol.

To get all of your stats, go to
My Computer (Right click), properties, and there you are. Mobo model should be included in there as well unless thats where you got your stats.

@aikiwolfie, She posted she has an Dimension E310. Don`t worry about DV number. That has nothing to do with it.

How the Dell did I miss that? I must be spending too long on here.
sugarbear
11/26/07
Trust me, It`s easy to overlook it. I do it all the time. What`s worse I read something or half read it, then go back when someone posts, and try to figure what is going on. Then I read the idea again and discover I missed something due to half reading or NOT paying attention. I`m going to blame it on senility and semi old age.

You know, her computer has the spec of a good computer, so it should support that. I have an old sony that can own most people in everything (even Rome: Total War) Yet I just cant seem to get Starcraft to run right on it.

Anywho, Katie, Your computer should have a PCIE x16 slot. so it should be okay.

Yes, it should.

I, for one, am irritated at myself for not understanding the limitations of integrated graphics in laptops, for now I am stuck with one that cannot do the thing I purchased my laptop for: Engage with SecondLife. Down with integrated graphics that just do not perform.

integrated graphics are over kill for 90% of home users. If you are a gamer, buy a video card as an option or aftermarket. There are integrated chipsets that can support aero too.
