When is a 'duplicate' idea a 'repeat' idea

240 points posted to IdeaStorm by badblood 11/13/07

Let's face it there are billions of duplicate ideas on this website, leading to clutter and misplaced votes. They annoy us, bore us and distract us.

But lets agree that some ideas that appear again are not in fact duplicates they are repeats of an older good idea. Why do we repeat ideas? Because after some time all ideas get lost and are difficult to find, new people don't see them. Others Dell have said they would do something about but have sat on, thinking that we might not notice. In both cases some ideas are worth repeating as part of our advocacy efforts.

So when is a 'duplicate' a repeat idea? When we intentionally post the same idea for advocacy purposes. When we note and admit that it is the same as an older idea.

Leave repeat ideas alone. Do not merge repeat ideas. Do not delete repeat ideas.

Thanks.

Yes, badblood, ideas _are_ repeated because the original issue has been 'buried over time' -AND- because Dell never provided ANY response to the original idea(s).

You know I once posed the suggestion that Dell at least have an 'ACKNOWLEDGED' status to confirm that they had, indeed, REVIEWED it or that it was (hopefully?) in SOME stack that Dell WOULD review.

Still, whether or not Dell provided such a STATUS, when we hear nothing else and STILL want to see change, yes, we DO re-submit.

Now, there's another point, badblood. Namely, that isn't it MORE likely that NEW visitors to IdeaStorm will be more LIKELY to SEE ideas under the "RECENT IDEAS" list?

In that case (I VERY rarely look at 'popular' and MOST popular aren't necessarily the ones I think I should be MOST interested IN!), re-submission is the best way to get CURRENT visibility, is it not?

In other words, I don't know that re-submitting an idea for a fresh look is a bad thing. If this site had a folder structure, perhaps rather than merging Dell could create an appropriate folder WITHIN a category to collect similar/repeat submissions.

badblood - is that a typo that you want Dell to delete repeat ideas instead of merging them?

Don't think it's a typo. @bb: Should it read: merge the older idea into the new one or delete the old (harder-to-find) one? (Though I don't want this done)

I say leave the new idea for a week to get some votes and them merge it into the old one. Maybe address the reason it was reposted as well because it was most likely reposted because Dell didn't pay attention to the origional.

That's a good way of doing it. It makes sense, and also serves the purpose. Maybe this time around when it is posted, there could be a few more people looking at it than previously (Dell people, I mean).

Maybe it should be the other way around... merge the OLD one into the NEW one!

Yes, phubert, that's what I mentioned earlier. Merge the Old into the New. Get the views and comments. That should get some start. Wonder whether the Linux ideas can be re-written. :)

Ah but in my case I posted the environmental contest idea because they still didn't answer badblood. I don't want him to loose points, I just want an answer.

We are all seeking answers. Hope there is some forthcoming.

BTW, today is 14th and there were supposed to be some announcements. Heard/read any?

nothing's easy, is it? tho perhaps the whole point system needs to be revisited... meaning, perhaps, no one ever LOSES points?????

I think repeats are still duplicates. They should still be merged... after a while.

Posting repeats is simply a way to circumvent the chaos (but also add to it).

repetition is a basic principle of education cosh. Imagine that if you were never made to repeat your alphabet?

I'm not sure I ever was. :-/ I can say it backwards though, really fast.

It comes from practice, and to practice, you would have to repeat. Hence, it does not add to the chaos. It can add to intelligence. (LOL!)

Its not really repeat, but nag idea. I don't have anything against them really, most repeat ideas have a cause or reason to be repeated... I mean nag.

I say let the "repeat" stand...but merge the ideas and because it's repeated put it back up-top until Dell implements a system to show ideas by their vote counts/popularity.
