CAR PC

-140 points posted to New Product Ideas by tundrascout 11/13/07

How about an Auto PC that has a monitor that fits a Double Din in dash mounting area without modifications?

Why couldn't/wouldnt Dell modify a laptop to fit this standard mount?

Currently, there are only imported European models that only fit in certain vehicle models and go for over $2000. There are few inexpensive options for an out of box Car PC. It's a growing trend, its new, it would combine existing technologies,
You might be surprised at the Demographics of this emerging market.
Why have all these hot spots - does anyone carry around a laptop everywhere? Who wants to pay for cell phone internet if there was a free option right in your dash?

Personally, I am appauled at the current offerings of flimsy motorized mounts that pop up over most dashboards. I mean really, isnt the technology already there for an imbeded car PC?

the roads are unsafe enough without a pc in the car.

Thing is, its already on the market in a different form (Motorized Monitor - you can get them at just about any retailer that sells car stereos ). Navigation systems are already there. Is a GPS a distraction? Name one auto manufacturer that doesnt have some vehicle that offers an onboard navigation system. They are on the road already. Technically, wouldnt the radio also be considered a distraction? Where (and whom) to draw the lines. If driving with it would be a safety hazard, why not have it cut to 1/2 or 1/4 screen when the vehicle is in drive? Where is the creativity on this site?

And if that PC controlled the car and ran Windows, wow. An error at every intersection, and a BSOD could crash the car. Nope, this one's not for me.

Surprise, Your typical mechanic is going to be out of business in less than 10 years simply because they cant service new cars being buit today with all the electronics in them, stock. Electronic Control Modules (ECUs) have grown into a full onboard network connecting all the modules: one for engine, Transmission, DIfferential, security. Like it or not, its coming.

Pimp My Ride - Funny, but that show has really created markets.

Yep, definitly not for everyone, but then cellphones took 20 years to go mainstream, mostly due to the high cost at the time.
How did we get along without them?
I see there are more requests like this poping up on this site :D
Maybe Ford's "Sync" will get auto manufacturers more involved, requesting more new "Gadgets" sooner.
I sent an email to Sony asking if they have anything in the works, and they stated that they will not comment on topics of research and development.
