Windows, UNIX, Solaris, Apple OS, Amiga OS, Linux (multiplied by a bazillion if you count each distribution separately), and Haiku are just a few of the OSs competing for user support. What we don't need right now is another OS.
The operating system is, in the end, merely infrastructure for applications - applications the user wants to use to get their job done, play their games, or learn. There are plenty of operating systems out there competing for mindshare by the application authors. There's no reason for Dell to create a Dell-unique operating system. Dell does already sell Microsoft Windows versions, several Linux distributions, and yes, even Solaris to some customers.
Hi matt, welcome back. How'd you manage to make such an awesome revelation sound so dull. Dell sells SOLARIS! Well actually I knew that already. I just wanted your attention. Focus on my watch as it swings back and forth and repeat after me
Dell will adopt Ubuntu as it's primary OS. Dell will adopt Ubuntu as it's primary OS. Dell will adopt Ubuntu as it's primary OS. Dell will adopt Ubuntu as it's primary OS. Dell will adopt Ubuntu as it's primary OS. Dell will adopt Ubuntu as it's primary OS. Dell will adopt Ubuntu as it's primary OS. Dell will adopt Ubuntu as it's primary OS. Dell will adopt Ubuntu as it's primary OS. Dell will adopt Ubuntu as it's primary OS.
... and your awake!
So what's the deal with Ubuntu anyway? Are we going to see it on a half decent system? I have it running from a USB drive with an XPS 700 dude! Aparently the folks at Gentoo Linux know how to configure dmraid to work with NVIDIAs mince RAID setup. Maybe you should give them a call. Make a date. Discuss it over coffee. Bang some heads together. Get us a decent Ubuntu system.
Man your old!!! LOL you still have it though. Dell UNIX that is. So anyway bang heads together and get Ubuntu on a decent system. Like I've been saying all over IdeaStorm, it works on an XPS 700! Just take your own advice from linux.dell.com and disable the raid array or alternatively figure out how to use dmraid. And then tell me first so i can be first to have it working :oD
Apple didn't create it's own OS. It added it's own custom features to an existing OS.
Dell has a different priority set and continues to make money and provide solutions with that priority set. Creating a different OS would be a waste of resources since Ubuntu and Vista (and XP) are such good operating systems anyways.
@mugunth: Dell employees certainly do write, and assist with maintenance of, Linux device drivers. Just a few examples in the Linux source tree we've touched:
Hi Matt....Dell can have either Microsoft/ Linux/ whtever OS created exclusively for it's official / office dealings within the organization
The OS adopted within an organiztion should have the Dell Logo embeded within the OS used by any member of the Dell Organiztion. Say for eg a Power Point template...The power point template used by any member within the Dell organization should all be uniformly designed with the Dell Logo ...and any borders to match the purpose. Similarly an Excel sheet / MS word...the history should denote as Author:name of the department , date of creation, and the name Dell ( Organization's name)
what is your opinion Matt?....;). I posted this long time before in the Dell website...;)
I dont think its ignoring, its the inability to answer the question. Unless Matt is one of the people setting up the Linux systems, then theres little/no way Matt, in such a large company, knows the answer
@ dwood, I promoted this idea keeping in mind the idea I have discussed with Matt.....plz look above for the comments I posted to Matt...;)). under the banner "Simplifying IT for Organizations"...;)
aikiwolfie: what's your definition of a "decent system" please? Every Server, every Precision workstation desktop model (don't tell me those aren't "decent", and now several Inspiron systems, with more in the pipeline I expect you'll be pleased with. But you're right - I won't pre-announce anything here.
petzymathuram: I don't understand your question, please elaborate. Dell does have a common PowerPoint template, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.
dwood: I'm closely related to the team that sets up the Ubuntu systems. I was the engineering team lead for 8 years before moving into a strategist position in the Office of the CTO. So while I'm no longer responsible for the day-to-day operations of the team, I do stay very familiar with the plans.
davmcn: I'm not mad, just clearing up incorrect perceptions. :-)
@ Hi Matt- Thanx 4 Yr response....My question is for any OS..ie MS / Linux / etc etc used by Dell employees within Dell . The OS used by an employee within Dell needs to have a Dell Logo. The used OS application history details needs to have info like date created/ date modified/ Name of the organization: ie Dell.
When any OS application like a MS word or Excel used by any employee within the organization gets used up outside the organization, the history needs to show the display the Dell logo.
Is there a method that can be used to embed the Dell logo in every page of MS word/ Linux / excel sheet / linux?
My question is that ...if this is possible? If this is possible will it help in minimizing Organizational data loss ? Is there a method to track the misuse of Organizational specific OS when used outside the organization? will this not be helpful for departments that deal with financial documentation / or any type of data transaction?
Does Dell have these features? Is this possible Matt?....tell me plzz...;)
This is the minimum configuration I think Dell should be advertising with it's PCs. All of these options are the Dell recommended options that are highlighted in green in the configuration screens. Advertise something like this and people will be more interested. Make Dells recommendations the default system and let people down grade if they want to.
Doing it this way makes the product look more attractive and ensures people who aren't comfortable configuring a system will get a decent system that will cope with their changing demands. People buy PCs thinking they'll use it just for e-mail and web browsing and then end up with a digital camera and gigs of photos and videos.
I do however think Ubuntu should be made available with all compatible systems. Including the XPS range. In the US the 420 I think is touted as something like a multimedia work station but in the UK it's pushed as a high end games rig. So Dell has already realized these machines are versatile and they appeal to more than just gamers.
Dell claims it's targeting PC enthusiasts with Ubuntu. PC enthusiast buy system like the XPS 420, 700, 720 and 720 H2C. They don't buy the Inspiron 530. That's because gamers and enthusiasts are largely one and the same crowed. But I suspect you already know that matt.
At the very least add a dual boot option to the OS selection.

Aiki.... Gutsy Gibbon just came out. how could you overlook that? Also, linux Support should be a mandatory 90 days (or loonger) no matter what Speakers with Subwoofer? are you crazy? Id be happy with just a pair of decent speakers Also, 320 GB is a lotto expect for a "decent" system. I have 230GB and I am still having trouble filling it up. 7200 rpm's is decent. 22" can be a bit overwhelming for people a 19"would be better. Other than that, your specs of a "decent" system are pretty good.
You're right. Add Gusty to that spec. I was concentrating on the hardware. I was trying to be fair to Dell and give them a break by making the spec something they could offer without having to really redesign anything.
I would have settled for a 20" display. But it wasn't on the list. Once you start messing with videos and photos and MP3s 230GB doesn't last long. I actually meant to pick the 500GB drive. Don't know what happened there but 320GB is good enough.
1024MB of RAM should be standard these days. I don't believe in configuring systems to the bare minimum you can get away with. To make a good impression on the customer it isn't enough for the system to just cope. It needs to perform. It should excel at the tasks the user challenges it with.
Hi dwood, there was a different OS installed in our systems 2 day...ie e-press...e-press excel etc... I need to learn 2 mrw....I was not interested 2 learn today, I just switched over to MS appstream appln
what is this e-press? is it Linux too? dwood I need your kind reply..;)
I just did a Google search. That's all it gave me really. Never actually heard of them my self but i have heard of Panda Antivirus. Did you install anything else petzy?
The kernels might be the same but there are a lot of different packages that are considered a part of the OS. Some distros use package 1to do task A while others use alternative package 2. Aditionally not all kernals are equal. Graphics drivers can be compiled directly into the kernel. But some distros refuse to use closed source drivers. So one kernel might have the nvidia driver while another will only have the vanilla VGA driver. That obviously affects the various features the OS can support. Which in turn determines the support services the vendor has to provide.
