Improve the Direct2Dell site

120 points posted to Dell Community by jervis961 10/31/07

OK folks they have moved the Ideas in action and Moderator update sections over to the Direct2Dell site so we can post comments on them and interact more with the admins. here is a link to the announcement for the unaware.

http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/10/30/32489.aspx

If they want us to post there they need to do some improvements to the site to make it work properly.

1. There is no log in so anyone can use your user name to post if they want.

2. The comments are moderated which effectively stops any real conversations from happening and can cause confusion when they finally post several comments at once.

3. There is no notification of comments being posted after yours, not even an option to have email notification.

4. The only way you will know if a new posting is put up on the site by an admin is to check the site often or subscribe to an RSS feed and check it. Not all users are even aware of what an RSS feed is never mind how to use it. Can't you cut down the size of the "Jump into the eye of the storm" button and add a small RSS section that shows the newest posts on Direct2Dell or something? Maybe a flashing red beacon to tell us something has changed?

Any other suggestions people?

Ah, jervis, you beat me to it! Was writing down points for a new idea based on the Direct2Dell announcement.

Thanks premcv, did I miss anything?

No, jervis, I was planning to highlight the point 1. That needs serious look at right away. Otherwise, you just might end up with chaos. Not that it is not any chaotic now. It could be disastrous.

Its another well planned addition to the community, brought to you by Dell. :)

I mean come on nobody thought of this before they did it?

That's the strange part! I thought that, it would've been one of the first and the most important thing they would've definitely looked at before going live with these announcements. It just takes (like dell_admin1 said on another post) 5 minutes of user_error to create confusion. Very strange indeed!

I wish I could find the idea where she discussed moving things to Direct2Dell. I know I mentioned the moderated comments problem but can't recall if I mentioned the user name thing.

They should improve the search too. Help us search for articles or references by anyone, not just ideas!

First we want to merge all Dell sites, they only provide links, now they want us to comment on IdeaStorm on Direct2Dell, what next sell Computers on IdeaStorm? Once again this proves our long standing point that this software from SalesForce.com is the worse written pile of excrement we've ever seen, they can't even add a place to list the IdeasInAction, Moderator Updates, etc... (non Idea pages) on this site without having to jump servers over to a regular site which CAN have content added.

Dell thats the proof the junk you bought from SalesFarce is well junk.

Well said jorge. Now we are stuck trying to help them fix all the Dell community sites.

I feel like I'm in a virtual reality ride. You get the impression that you are moving and everything is changing around you but when the ride is over you haven't gone anywhere.

Oh and jorge there has been a reply to your comment on Direct2Dell. Since we don't have notifications I figured you might not know about it yet.

And dell_admin10 clearly indicated that they are trying to get a unified single-sign-on for all Digital media site, that can take a long time too! I don't know how soon this can be accomplished.

Seeing how there are all from different software vendors I'll push this one out to 2021.

ROTFLMHO! Why not 2020?

May be confused with 20/20 forward vision, which obviously is lacking.

Nothing like getting my Direct2Dell updates on IdeaStorm, gotta love the integration! Replied and added a few more but mainly lets keep IdeaStorm on IdeaStorm, this blog junk over on Direct2Dell is like TV shows that ask you to go to the web, total nonsense.

Well I figure we are stuck with it anyway so I posted this to try and at least improve it.

I wonder when they will merge this to Direct2Dell, then they won`t have very much to read. Deja vue all over again for me.

I don't think that the merger with Direct2Dell will happen. They are both differently structured and has different uses. IMHO!

Although Nick Petreley isn't that happy with XOOPS, I like a few things about the varlinux.org site...

* inline chat box
* list of users online
* indication BY each user's comments whether they're online
* sidebar box with recent stories with red asterisk by those with comments you _haven't yet seen_
* separate FORUMS section

No voting, tho. Users receive points for ALL interaction.

That's a nice design. With voting implemented, it could be a take off of Ideastorm.

Since submissions receive a count for each access (whether you simply follow the link to the ' article' (can be user-created inline text) or COMMENT or just READ comments, the submission count is a rough 'popularity' measure.

I wonder if voting (considering all the difficulties WITH voting) is really needed... (think outside the box???) :-D

Come to think of it, you are right!
