Dell.com: Save configuration as PDF / Image

160 points posted to Dell Web Site by rafael.gattringer 10/30/07

Immediately after configuring a new PC, the following options would be useful:

* Save configuration as PDF.
* Save configuration as image (PNG or JPG).

The PDF or image can be sent to a friend / customer.

Workaround: Firefox + Screengrab Extension

PDF / PNG / JPG has the advantage that it is displayed 1:1 on every platform in comparison to saving / sending as HTML.

Just install CutePDF or PDFWriter and save anything you want to PDF by printing to its print driver which produces a PDF. Oh, both are free and work better than Acrobat's Distiller, not to mention faster and smaller without any bloat add on.

That's a really good idea. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten over 100 votes yet.

Thanks peyre and jorge for the great idea.

On Ubuntu you can print to PDF with cups-pdf (see link for installation at end of comment). Works great. In some internet cafe or at some restricted / preinstalled business desktop a "Print to PDF" option might not be installed.

I sent a friend a large screengrabbed PNG file with the configuration. It was ok for a complete overview with the image viewer, but when my friend wanted to print the file it was scaled on one page with tiny text.

So the advantage of PDF is be to have multiple pages in one file. Sending multiple PNG files doesn't make any sense.

Therefore I would say, implement "Save as PDF", "Save as Image" is optional.

PDF's are good as long as Adobe isn't the product handling the PDF.
