Put a physical bluetooth switch on laptops

1180 points posted to Broadband and Mobility, Laptops by badblood 10/30/07

So you can easily switch it on and off and see that it's on or off....

The M90 has a blue key combo to turn on/off wireless and/or bluetooth. The key combo can be controlled/disabled/enabled by the bios. There are separate wifi and bluetooth lights above the keyboard.

All that is not standard on Dell notebooks?

Separate Bluetooth on/off software utility

I would like Dell software team to release a separate utility that will enable laptop users to switch on/off Bluetooth modules. This will help other Bluetooth stack (eg. XP Bluetooth stack) users to better manage power consumption. For instance, instead of switching on both wifi and bluetooth using the hardware switch for using only wifi, one now is able to turn bluetooth off. Ideally, this support must be targeted for XP and Ubuntu/Linux users.

Thanks.

@virtualpower:

Dell Quickset allows you to set which device the wireless switch activates upon use. Is this what you are referring to?

Hi Chris,

No Quickset does not work. Bluetooth doesn't disable via the Quickset, it just remains on and I cannot turn it off via the XP Stack or the switch! What I need is a software method to disable Bluetooth as so many customers. The forum moderator doesn't realize that both approach is TOTALLY different from implementation point of view for Dell and customers. For example, if Dell decides to implement this separate switch on newer laptops, what will happen to the millions of customers that doesn't have this switch? What I want is similar to Sony's Smart Wi or Toshiba's Bluetooth Monitor. I wonder if Dell can adapt the Toshiba Bluetooth Monitor for its customers since they are already using Toshiba Stack, and my request is merged into this one which is really ridiculous!!

Thanks.

Thanks for the clarification. Let's see how many others get behind this idea as well. =)

Hi Chris

Well...I don't know if this idea/request will ever get support because it is placed under a wrong idea, thanks to a certain forum moderator :(. Existing Dell customers cannot benefit from any hardware switch should Dell decides to implement it.

Thanks anyway.

Can you please explain what you mean by this? Placed under a wrong idea???

Jackie,

I have already explained this to you before. What I want is a software utility similar to Toshiba's Bluetooth Monitor, not a hardware switch. Your view to my request is quite superficial - "Something that turns bluetooth on and off" - but not looking closely at how the solution should be implemented. For existing Dell customers, a software utility is the most feasible solution as a hardware switch cannot be implemented on their existing laptops. It might also be cheaper for Dell to explore this option as well. In this light, how can my request be placed under something that is of a hardware switch?! Ok, lets say perhaps in a few years time, Dell decides to implement this hardware switch.. great, but then again, you also have customers that might not have this switch on their existing hardware. If Dell is already using Toshiba's Bluetooth stack, it would make sense to incorporate Toshiba's Bluetooth Monitoring Utility for customers that are using the XP stack. Toshiba and Sony have this utility for their customers, so why can't Dell? I am not giving Dell a new idea, but rather a request to Dell's software team to investigate on such a possibility and if I post it at the wrong forum, I apologize.
