New 24" Widescreen - connectors and availability

180 points posted to Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays by coachcg 10/28/07

Nice new monitor Dell in the E248WFP 24 inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor. But why only the DVI and VGA inputs? S-Video and Composite Video inputs please! An adjustable height stand would also be nice. HDMI and a couple of USB ports would really make the product a dream.

Also, please make available to order with new desktop systems, especially Inspirons.

Thanks!

If you want the additional ports, buy the Ultrasharp model.

The E model is the economy model and the reason it is cheaper is because there is no additional cost assosciated with the addition of things like the adjustable stand, ports and what not.

That's the sole reason for the E series to exist.

Dell already has those features in the Ultrasharp 2407 which is a best-seller and very well-reviewed and what I am use as my primary display at home :)

sazar - you are correct - my bad. But even so, a HDMI input would be nice and the Ultrasharp 2407 does not have that. I know that I could use a HDMI to DVI doggle, but it would be nice if we didn't have to bother with that.

Also neither is currently offered with the Inspiron configurations, and I am not sure if either is offered with other system configuration builds.

Yeah, and the 2407 only has one DVI port. So it limits you to either having a HD source or your PC connected with the highest picture quality, but not both. Fortunately, just yesterday I noticed that Samsung is now offering a 22 inch screen with VGA, DVI, HDMI, Composite, Component and TV inputs. May have been a few others as well. Hopefully this will prompt Dell and the other competitors to do the same. If not, I'm going with Samsung.

You can connect with the HD connectors present, VGA or DVI for high def.

I currently have my PC connected via DVI for gaming and I use my VGA connector for my xbox for 1080p.

Dell has display port coming out on all it's display refreshes, I seriously doubt you will see older technology like HDMI adopted, unless you use adapters.

HDMI is by no means old. And yes I know you can use DVI and VGA for high def, but they will never attain the same level of quality as HDMI. When Display port comes out, the only thing(s) i see it replacing is VGA and MAYBE DVI. HDMI is crucial on monitors, because so many high def, non-PC related products use it. And if you would use a DVI adapter for HDMI and then used VGA as your PC port, you certainly will lose ALOT of quality in your images on the PC.

Dvi and HDMI image quality is the same Maverick, HDMI simply carries audio as well.

Video cards with HDMI outputs are very limited and the only time you see a use for HDMI is when you have a PS3 or Xbox360 connected to your monitor.

Other than gaming consoles, what other items would you be connecting that have a need for HDMI on a PC display?

HDMI has many limitations which is why a new standard is being worked on.

I believe that new standard sazar is referring to is DisplayPort and it sounds like some good stuff is in store: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort.
> I, and I think many others, would like to use a large monitor as a TV screen without having to run all the signals through the computer, thus the request for other inputs. But after further research, it seems that if the monitor does not have an internal "video card" of some sort and relies in the computer graphics card for display quality, display quality is really poor. Is this correct? If so, do all the Dell "Ultrasharp" models with expanded connectivity have internal video processors? Is there a good way to tell if a display/monitor has an internal video processor?

You should be able to connect other devices to the DVI or VGA ports and use it just fine. The added support for USB ports and S-video/high-def inputs and the like are not present and that, along with the difference in the stand, should be the only difference.

I connect my Xbox 360 through my VGA port on my 2407 Ultrasharp at home, picture quality is just fine and I have it set to run @ 1080P. I am not running my Xbox through my PC at all, though I could. When I was, there was no difference in picture quality.

Thanks for the info.

How did you connect your Xbox? Did you use a direct cable conversion (S-Video/Composite/Component to VGA) or did you use a converter box?

I was connected using component but it was only providing 720P. I therefore bought the VGA connector setup and am using that. My desktop connects via DVI though.

It makes a HUGE difference in visual quality. I primarily play Halo 3, Forza 2, Dirt and Gears of War (some Top Spin 2 on the side) and needed the good res.

Thanks again. Can you explain the VGA connector setup that you have running - is it a cable end to cable end direct connect or through a converter.

Looks like Gateway is coming up with some better offerings than Dell in this area: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2213483,00.asp

Lets hope Dell will match this variety of inputs and video processor at this pricepoint soon.

Coach, there is a kit that you get, one end plugs into the Xbox, I have the Halo version, the output is VGA plus audio and I simply plug the VGA bit into my display and boom, I get 1080P on my 24" display. I prefer not to scale so I have 2 black bars, about 60 pixels tall at the top and bottom.

Thanks sazar. Can you give me the name of the kit and/or where to get it (or does it come with Xbox?)

It's an official Xbox kit. Any store that sells it will carry it :)

I don't think it comes with the Xbox, only the component and HDMI cables come with the xbox.

I must say I'd prefer two DVI ports or a DVI and an HDMI port. Kill the VGA port; just ship an adapter for customers on ancient equipment (and leave it out entirely when shipping a bundled display).

What I'd love would be an LED backlit ultrasharp WITH A DECENT BRIGHTNESS CONTROL. The 2407FPW (CCFL) is just too bright at minimum brightness, so I have to turn the pixel gains down too (costing me video quality) to get it down to around 140 cd/m^2 for day-to-day work.

Note that I do love ultra bright panels. They're great for bright / outdoor environments, etc. They just need the option to be dimmed right down when reading etc.
