I put up a very similar idea some months ago and the dell admins deleted it......

Dell has repeatedly made it clear that they do NOT provide sales figures.

If Dell Ubuntu _purchasers_ would open a thread on IdeaStorm, that could be most valuable, however!

In the interview Michael Dell gave to Jeff Jarvis recently he skirted around the question and is still using the 1 % figure. It was fun watching him squirm in his seat during the interview though. Also laughed when he mentioned reg's idea to buy

they claim sales figures being release is breaking a policy but either way why release the figures and show the competition that they are saling that would just bring more and more companies into the linux desktop market not something dell is ready for im sure

As phubert said, we have a policy not to release sales figures, so we don't plan to do so

Oh great company. You guys need to go to business school in Norway and learn about corporate responsibility and transparency.

It may be a corporate culture issue, but I wouldn't judge their policy without knowing more about the reasons behind it. Since I'm not at all acquainted with corporate law or SEC governance, et al, I can't see how I could presume to judge Dell on this. Is it any different for their U.S. competitors?

@john_h - any simple explanation -for- the policy to satisfy those who question it? Somehow, it just doesn't matter to me. I can't see it as being in any way deceptive or misleading.

I'm sure shareholders would like to know.

They might, jervis, but then that's up to THEM to request, isn't it? Still, from what I've seen of stock traders, THEY have a different mindset, altogether, and I KNOW I don't relate to them! They have little interest, so far as I've seen, in ANY values that are not economic. Reminds me of my father... whenever he saw a vacant lot he'd ask what they were going to BUILD on it... I rejoiced that it hadn't yet been PAVED OVER! Of an animal, he would ONLY ask if it was good to eat! (I'm no vegetarian, but I also love animals!)

one simple reason is that it would let others know that the sales prove that it is a line that has sold well and would cause competition in a market where their really isnt much or any depending on how you look at it
