Admit it - you were wrong....Send Steve Jobs a bottle of Champagne.

40 points posted to Service and Support by badblood 10/22/07

Ten years ago this month, Michael Dell said Steve Jobs should ```shut down'' Apple Inc. and return the money to shareholders.Dell then had a market value of $4 billion to Apple's $700 million. Apple's valuation has since soared to $150 billion, more than double that of its rival. Last month, Apple passed PC leader Hewlett-Packard Co. in market capitalization for the first time.

How the winds of success are fleeting.

Admit it - You were wrong.

Send Steve Jobs a bottle of Champagne.

like anyone ever admits anything these days. You're not supposed to remember, like voters shouldn't remember what politicians say...

Apple is enjoying great success now as Dell has once before but the tide can certainly change. I'm sticking with Dell for now and the future.

xtcpc this idea isn't intended for you to choose sides - Apple v Dell. It is only meant to get Mr. Dell to admit he was wrong about Apple and send Mr. Jobs a bottle of champagne to celebrate his success. That way Mr. Dell's Karma will improve and public opinion of him should also improve.

whats is the interest of such an idea ? the best way to show that that dell was wrong is to change.

Lol I would still say that he should do that. I think Michael Dell would be oh so happy if apple's 5% of the market suddenly coudln't get their macs anymore. What will they buy then? DELLS! free 5% market share!

12 years ago Steve Jobs SHOULD have shut-down Apple. People seem to have ammnesia :) Apple had an abysmal business model and nothing note-worthy on the market. Apple would likely have gone under if not for the iPod's advent.

Look up the stock information from that time-frame. Heck, Apple didn't really start to turn it around till 2001/2002 or so. 1995 was a decent year, to start and then it went downhill till Jobs came on-board and it took HIM a few years to turn things around.

When was the last time Dell was not profitable?

Down down half bitten apples..;)
No no way...Only Dell...;)
badblood
10/25/07
well the point sazar is that Apple didn't go under even if one product held it together for such a long time. And Mr. Dell should have the foresight to realize that they could pull themselves up and out of their problems, which is exactly what he is trying to do now.

10/25/07
No No Ga Ga....you juzz wait and see...Dell will outshine everybody..It's that Dell "believed" but it "was" the other way around....it will patch it up in no time....I stand for Dell...;)....well, Dell is "not busy" pulling out of problems...but "actually busy" with "new technology updates/ new products/ ideas/ upgrading the organization" etc etc...what is your opinion Ga ga?...
badblood

Dell's success is/was based on their product delivery and service modality. That's old hat now and is no longer better than competitors. They have to substantially improve their sales and service and probably come up with something new and interesting or their market share will continue to decrease. There are no longer any advantages to buying Dell, because the difference in service quality and price are largely immaterial these days. Differences these days are assessed in terms of innovation and packaging. To be brutally honest Dell has never been very good at either. Apple on the other hand was defined by both and is rushing up the ladder. HP is adapting and has reached the top. That is my opinion petzy

The real fact is that Dell was perhaps not updated with new ideas, but now Dell is really bridging the gaps with more Qualitative Approach.

Ga Ga , well quoting your statement..."Apple on the other hand was defined by both and is rushing up the ladder. HP is adapting and has reached the top"

All other brands need to "rush up" with a haste to reach the top...BUT Dell does have all the potentiality, resources, intelligence, technology upbeats which "gives them the maturity and confidence that "Top" position is "defnitely theirs" and it "will ever remain over there"...
other competitors rush up out of anxiety..but Dell owns the confidence that it will be , it is and it shall be.....what do you say now Ga ga?

No, Apple did not go under, thanks in large part to a HUGE influx of cash from Microsoft of all companies. Looking at the big-picture and the context of the comment and how the various companies currently stand, there is no reason for Michael Dell to apologize for a comment from 1995. It was relatively accurate at the time which is my point.

Also, speaking of apologies, Badblood, I don't see companies like Apple apologizing for ripping off Dell's business model and their supply line and channel partnerships.

@badblood - how does this benefit Dell customers? This doesn't seem like an idea fit for IdeaStorm if there's no benefit to customers.

There is plenty of benefit for Dell in this idea. Any time an executive makes a statement in public like that and ends up being wrong, they should own up to it. It happens all the time in the business world. It may be embarrassing to Michael Dell to do it but he will get some respect out of it as well.

If J. Allard of Microsoft can wear dreads and pose with a PSP after losing a bet, Mr. Dell can ship off a bottle of bubbly and admit he was wrong.

What bet did Michael Dell lose?
jervis961

He didn't loose a bet but he did make a pretty big statement in the media. It could be seen as an offer of a bet. :)

Again, look at financials at the time and what everyone in the industry was saying. There were some terrible business decisions made even with Jobs around. It took a while for the iPod to take off and become the cash-cow it has now.

The statement at the time was accurate and a reflection of anyone who was looking at the strength of the company's financials. Note that Apple wasn't exactly shy about touting it's market capitalisation and taking jabs :)

It's just the way it goes.

I was just defending the idea from deletion sazar.

It's not exactly an idea that should be on here in the first place, heck I'm hard-pressed to consider it an idea at all.
badblood
11/06/07
dell_admin1 Mr. Dell's gift to Steve Jobs will \will boost consumer confidence and trust in big business and more importantly in Dell. The deletion or censorship of this idea will reflect poorly on Dell and will demonstrate a singular unwillingness to be open and transparent.

I think you should consider writing a letter to Michael Dell directly. Do you really think this has a place on Ideastorm and then suggesting that it is in poor taste for being a daft suggestion? Come on. This has nothing to do with openess and transparency and is more an abuse of the freedoms provided than anything else.

We are all agreeing to terms and conditions before posting here. There are rules and consequences.

I think, sazar, that you take things far too literally.

Badblood, I may well be. But we have enough ideas posted here to have to put up with non-ideas. It's a waste of space and then you threaten the admin by saying deletion will be bad because of???
badblood
11/15/07
sazar why are you trying to hold me responsible for all of the non-ideas on this site?
sazar
11/16/07
Not all of the non-ideas, just this one that you have started. Since when is it wrong to hold the original poster responsible for their own post?

Besides, I haven't seen many (or any) of the other OP's threaten admins to prevent deletion of a thread.

I don't see this as supporting Apple just calling out Dell is all. When you make a mistake own up to it.
