make linux systems EASY TO FIND

6380 points posted to Dell Web Site by phubert 10/18/07

At other sites, I have seen comments by individuals who have BOUGHT Dell Ubuntu systems complaining about the difficulty FINDING said systems.

I think you'll get more sales if you improve the visibility!

Comments about FINDING Linux Dell's-

Quote:

" Can you think of any other reason why it's so hard to find Ubuntu PCs or RH/SUSE servers on Dell's Web site? Especially now, when both Dell and Canonical say they are pleased with the number of pre-installed units that are shipping."

Nope, its easier to find the FreeDOS PC's than the Ubuntu ones. I always give up after a while and just search for Linux. I have found that the following link will get you to it too http://www.dell.com/linux< my last employment, we purchased rack mount servers with RedHat from Dell. I don't remember that being as hard to find as the dekstop machines now. That was back in 2000 or 2001. RedHat did come pre-installed.

Hello, Dell? What about this one??????

Ubuntu should be in the list of operating systems along with Windows XP and Vista. Dells on-line ordering and customization software is capable of detecting conflicts. There's just no need for a separate page.

Yes, and I'd rather NOT receive -any- advertizing by Dell, in the mail or with the newspaper, with ONLY recommendations for VIsta in them... and NO offer of Linux!! As long as Dell continues that, I am unlikely to SHOP with them (outside my dealings with them at work, that is).

Ubuntu isn't the only none-Dell product Dell offers but doesn't advertise as much as Windows Vista or even at all. Microsoft have obviously made it worth Dells effort to put out those adverts. As much as hate to admit it there's nothing illegal in that and nothing much to complain about there.

But with that said there's still no need for a separate Open Source page.

It is unlikely that Dell (or any other 1st tier pc vendor) actually wants to promote or increase the sales of Linux. Dell offers Linux because if they didn't, then IDEASTORM would have been nothing more than a promotional sham. In other words, it is being sold because they painted themselves into an uncomfortable corner. Don't expect to see Dell (or any other...) to make any attempts to increase the demand for their Linux offerings. If they did, Microsoft would certainly begin making threatening noises.

Having said that, I will still consider Dell's Linux offerings (along with System76 and others) for my next laptop.

I want a laptop with Ubuntu on it. But not the one Dell are currently offering. I'm trying to hold out for the tablet that is somewhere in the halls of Dell. But I'm growing impatient and will probably end up going to HP or someone else.

Dell Tesco are now selling Linux PCs. They also sell them right along side Windows PCs.

UBUNTU powered laptops are what I / my colleagues are looking for. We are disappointed with dell as we don't have any options. There is only one model for Ubuntu which is bad. We want to see Ubuntu like windows so that we can choose the Ubuntu for all laptops. Dell should make the Ubuntu explicit (must be easy to find). DELL I HOPE YOU ARE READING THIS. Please act NOW and be a Leader!

I doubt Dell will ever lead. They like to sit back and watch others take the risk. And then settle in to second or third place.

@hotshotdj - You hit the nail on the head with that comment. The only addition is that Dell used the Ubuntu Linux page as a way to clean out the machines that were too underpowered to run Vista (i.e. didn't have dual core and 2GB of DRAM). You might have noticed that there was a E1505N laptop on that page for a while, but it was not replaced after it sold out. It is really a shame because Ubuntu really runs nice on my new Latitude as well as my old Inspiron. Instead of pressuring Dell to add more Linux offerings, we should be pushing the HW peripherals vendors to offer more Linux drivers, and to add Linux support to their products.

I agree with phubert ...If i get something in the male promoting Vista,it goes right to the trash.
It's time to let Linux shine and include it a=in all your advertising.

I think I've seen jesse_l post in the forums. She genuinely seems eager to help. Which means she's probably as mental as the rest of us.

Ordering my M1330n today :o)

Dell needs to move to a much more general design of laptop selling.
Having so much diversity on their site causes confsionand forces sales a lot of things go unnoticed.

Dell should have No-OS set as the default for online buying and let you choose.
Pricing as such.

$0 No Operating System (Only for a Self Install)
$5 Open Source OS's
$99 Vista Home
...etc
phubert

Not a bad approach... you left out WinXP, of course ... but your ...etc. I suppose takes care of that as well... right?

Feb 19
@phubert: the reason I left out windows XP is because Microsoft is going to stop support for Windows XP in 2009 which is next year. Though yes the etc takes care of that I guess Dell could sell XP if they want(and are able to) to.

Microsoft will stop issuing new licenses before they stop supporting XP which means it will be off the list of OSs unless Dell can gather up enough secondhand licenses to support demand. Which I think is doubtful.
