Let the cooling fan rock!

50 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops by fleser 10/18/07

has anybody out there seen a really silent notebook fan ?... let me know!
I have not! So as long as we can not eliminate the cooling fan sound (ear plugs are no solution),

why not convert the fan NOISE to MELODIES?

Any wishes for a melody, song ..?

I had a toshiba laptop (M100) that never ever made any noise.

It's a nice idea, but you want to have the cooling fan make *more* noise? The noise they make is due to friction or component vibration, and it's unintentional--you couldn't really convert that to music without adding to the noise it makes. Besides, if you could do this sort of thing, you couldn't please a majority of people with whatever tunes you get it to play. And what if someone wanted to play music on their PC--different music from what the fan was humming? That might make people unhappy.

Sorry, not meaning to be wet blanket; I just don't see it as a very practical idea when you really stop to think about it.

I'm hoping it was a joke. That's how I took it.

I can see a musical cooling fan becoming as irritating as the idiots on the train that sit there listening to music on their mobile phones. Without headphones.

Have the fan oscillate at the resonate freq. as the mp3 playing!

it could be part of the kit with aromatherapy

@jervis961: ...actually this idea was inspired by the aromtherapy kit ... so of course for some people it is a joke (or irritating) but for others it might be a nice feature to get attention or fun .. like a ringtone. - "It´s gettin hot in here" great! ;-)
@peyre: the idea is to use different fan speeds to shift the noise frequency caused by friction - if you use on average the same frequency as before you might not add noise (or significantly change the cooling function). ... and if you get bored or disturbed there should be an option to switch back from "rock" to "noise" mode.

Ok, fleser, that makes a bit more sense. Thanks for not taking my comment harshly!

"Any wishes for a melody, song ..?"

How about Johann Sebastian Bach's Orchestral Suite #3?

Of course, I prefer the PC playing the music to the fan playing it. I prefer silent fans, and would rather have the PC play the music.
