Why has the N-Series lost its high end

140 points posted to Desktops, Sales Strategies by tekhawk 10/17/07

Id just like to know as am sure many other would like to know, why has the N-Series "ubuntu series" lost it's higher end desktop and laptop.....

Sorry I know this is not a idea but it is a question many must want to know.

So the question is why did dell drop 2 units from the N-Series?

What was the reasoning behind this?

It actually is and idea, why has the N-Series been raped of its N-ness? It is meant to be the Linux series and they each day take away from allowing a customer to buy one with Ubuntu or any Free OS for that matter, opps I meant OpenSource OS. They keep forcing RedCrap, I mean RedHat but here where I am its all OpenSource and has been on the N-Series and non-N-Series for years, they won't let us buy without an OS, yet the moment we open the box the OS is overwritten heck the whole hard drive is overwritten, sometimes we even use our own and put that drive in the Drive bin for re-use elsewhere, sometimes our price is way better or we just need something else. Then they limit what components you can add to them vs the Winblows version, so we end up having to buy the winblows version for some and wipe that. It blows me away that customers end up doing what they can't seem to do or allowed to do by Microcrud. Then they bring up dumb themes for us like SimplifyIT, well Dell you're not going to simplify IT by hog tying it to Microcrap or any other 3rd party so we can't get what we want. I just wonder what the next Lightning rod will be, will it be "show us how we will never conform to what you will actually pay for?"

I fear we'll never get a plain honest answer out of Dell. Why oh why can't they give us a simple "No Operating System Installed" option across all ranges? People have asked and asked, but Dell just won't answer it.

But answer ye this idea Mr Dell, or I'll harass ye to heck and back.

The systems have dropped from the Ubuntu order page because they are no longer sold by Dell; they have reached what we call the "end of sales life". The initial launch included the Dimension 520n, Inspiron E1505n, and XPS 410n. The Dimension 520n and E1505n reached the end of their sales life in the US, and were replaced with with Inspiron 530n and 1420n. Recently, the XPS 410n reached the end of its sales life. We'll replace it soon with another XPS system when we release Ubuntu 7.10

Will it be an outdated XPS or maybe the M1330?

Most likely the ugly duckling 1730, of course without all the high end components, if their product trends with Ubuntu continue.

I agree

i just dont understand why we get a downgrade from the last laptop i hope the one coming with 7.10 is a step in the right direction

That is the whole reason I made the idea about all their future systems having Linux and no OS as an option. There is no excuse for not doing it.

i can see the no-os option even though i strongly support the idea of all systems with ubuntu it is not practical until the hardware providers give in to our demands not dell

I read somewhere that they are coming around now that dell is offering the systems. look at AMD being more open with their drivers.

amd has always been a supporter of linux they have never had a reason to offer drivers though until the buyout of ati (; ; wish they would have done a buyout on nvidia but they have good drivers already)

but i do agree the open source world does have a strong momentum going at the moment :-)

@tekhawk - for competitive reasons, we can't say right now which XPS it will be and exactly when... but I can tell you that I think, based on the community's feedback here, that you all will be pleased. As for timing, we'll share more information in the next month.
