Please do not make the XPS M1530 look like this!

-280 points posted to XPS products, Simplify IT by winoffice 10/09/07

Take a look at these pictures of the Dell XPS M1530.

After the XPS M1730, this is probably the ugliest Dell notebook that I have seen. What is especially ugly is the white keyboard, the small hole on the top inside of the lid, the protruding "key" below the down key, and the black Dell circular logo. I am praying to God that the XPS M1530 will not look like this.

  1. Make it look more like the XPS M1710 or better still the Inspiron XPS Generation 2 on the inside. At least make the keyboard black instead of white.
  2. On the outside of the lid, you can keep the background black, but make the Dell circular logo silver instead of black.
  3. Also, please remove the small hole on the top inside of the lid. If it is a web camera/PC video camera, then make it optional.
  4. Remove the protruding "key" from below the down key.

winoffice - it is just a bigger version of the XPS M1330 with some minor changes. The protruding key is the fingerprint reader and the hole is the web cam which should be optional like on the 1330. I'm undecided on the Dell circle but totally agree on the white keyboard. It also looks like they took away the metal on this one and went with plastic all around. Maybe the metal was the paint issue on the 1330?

Yeah, if you read the engadget article those images are from, they list the fingerprint reader and camera as part of the specs for it. Personally I don't mind the black circular dell logo, I think on the primarily black cover it looks nice. I think it looks better than the all silver dell logos on some of their other prodcuts.

As far as the white/black keyboard thing goes, I think a black keyboard would look unusual if it were set against the whole rest of the layout being white. If they changed the whole thing to black then I would agree with that.

One thing I have been wondering about these pics though is that it looks as though the white plastic may be possibly a textured aluminum instead of plastic. Obviously this is difficult to tell just from a few pictures, but it is possible that it could be a light colored textured metal.

Personally I like it. It looks like one of the swanky silver LCDs. Of which I have the 20" and 27" models ;o) It's certainly a massive improvement looks wise on the last XPS laptop. It's clean, solid looking without any crap that will only serve to sap the battery. Considering the overall colour scheme, the white keyboard is the way to go. Black would just look so out of place.

The finger print scanner is a good idea. In theory. But what happens if it gets broken? How is it reset? If it can be easily reset is there any point?

Fine, it is a fingerprint reader...but I see no reason why it should be protruding!

If it is similar to other fingerprint readers in function and implementation, it's actually a recessed device. The plastic around it slopes down so you can get to it which is below the level of the bezel. Also if it breaks or if you say burn your fingerprints off you can still override it with a password. (at least that's how it is with most implementations i've seen of them).

I agree, I think the fingerprint reader is recessed, very nearly flat. But looks like it was just pasted on from a computer mock-up drawing or something - the perspective is different to the rest of the photograph, isn't it?

But I do think the keyboard should be black. Fortunately Dell offers laptops with both black and white styles, but I've never liked the white ones. Funny how it looks so gorgeous on a Macbook and so wrong on a Dell.

What the hell happened to these Dell experts that are meant to be contributing to Idea Storm? Can't they tell us?

They aren't allowed to comment on rumors and speculation.

They can't comment on rumours or speculation? This site just gets more useful by the day.

Would be great if it has an illuminated keyboard and GeForce 8700m. Otherwise I'll have to wait for a lower-spec XPS m1730...

All the ports are in the right place too - don't want too much on the right (gets in the way of the mouse for right-handed people). Looks pretty much perfect.

No doubt. Hopefully Dell will realize that many many folks are willing to pay extra for an illuminated keyboard.

Yeah the illuminated keyboard would be a great additional feature.

Which is exactly what we've told them a thousand times since IdeaStorm started. They just don't get it.

Dell do seem to be taking their sweet time over a number of popular ideas. Which really makes me question the whole point of Idea Storm.

I agree they should not make it look like that. Put the Leds on the oustide(back panel)(fans)(speakers) like the M1710 with the 3 M1330 optional base colors(white)(black)(red). Then it would be a really sweet laptop.

Too many LEDs are just tacky. A nice simple back lit keyboard. It doesn't need much more than that.

I hope they make this laptop EXACTLY like the photo. It is sleek with clean lines and will probably be offered in black, Crimson Red and Alpine White. The M1330 and this one are probably the best designed laptops Dell has ever offered to consumers. The keyboard looks like it will be silver just like the M1330. Hopefully the specs and performance will be very good. Now all we need is the release date. With the XPS One just released this week and the updated Inspiron 1525/1526 slated for mid December, hopefully the M1530 will be available in the next few weeks.

jervis961, if you agree on the white keyboard and think that it should be black, you should have promoted this idea, not demoted!

I think I misread #1 as to make the entire notebook look like the 17" and went "EWW" as I clicked demote. I will admit that upon rereading I should have promoted, SORRY. Perhaps reposting the idea with better wording so people understand you only mean the keyboard and not the overall look would help.

jervis961 vote Status Changed to **OOPS should have promoted**

jervis961 - what's wrong with making it look more like the M1710 or XPS Generation 2?

1. I said "more like" and not "entirely like" or "completely like" - "more like" simply means "to a greater degree". I did not say "completely" or "entire" as you said in your last comment (you said "as to make the entire notebook look like the 17" ") so that is not an excuse for demoting.

2. Didn't you promote this idea http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/75269/Ditch_the_XPS_M1730_as_soon_as_po...? I thought that it talked about making the notebooks look more like the Inspiron XPS Generation 2, just like this idea does!

Like I said misread. I swear I thought you meant the new 17 inch,
winoffice
12/07/07
jervis961: the new 17 inch notebooks by Dell are the Inspiron 1720/1721 and the XPS M1730. I mentioned neither of them in this idea!

Well either way I did apologize winoffice, try not to take it so personally. Why are you suddenly attacking me about a vote made 2 months ago anyway? I'm guessing at reasons here, I must have misread it, end of story.

jervis961: But I mentioned the XPS M1710 and the Inspiron XPS Generation 2. Somehow I cannot imagine misreading that, as I mentioned the specific models. But I will trust you on the misreading issue.

But let us move on to the notebooks that I did mention now. You still did not answer me on another question made yesterday - what's wrong with making it look more like the M1710 or XPS Generation 2 (not the 1720/1721 or the M1730) - the notebooks that I did mention in the idea?

To be honest I'm getting board with black everything on the PC. It was a nice change from beige. But there's a whole rainbow of colours out there. Silver/aluminum looks nice and smart. But sometimes I'd like to see something more exciting.

Everybody feels differently aikiwolfie. I like black keyboards but admit there can be some glare. I like the look of the M1530 overall in spite of my preference of black.

davmcn: if black is preferable for you, how can you like the looks of the M1330 and the M1530 (neither of them having a black keyboard)????
