Show all kind of Operating Systems when you build a computer

290 points posted to Sales Strategies by satira 10/04/07

The main idea is that you can choose and make YOUR computer... as you wish, personalized.... that's a reason why i choose a brand like Dell over the others cause let me make my computer as i want and deliver it full working... if you can choose the color, shape.. size... capacity... why don't choose your operating system??? there ar so many...

"all kind" of operating system isn't practical on x86 systems. I don't think many people are interested in TOPS-20 or CTSS or CP/M anymore, and many operating systems (z/OS, Vista ;-) ) don't seem to run well on mainstream X86 computers.

i miss OS2

The list should definitely include the Amiga OS.

Perhaps it's time to consider M.A.M.E. an OS -- or at least a virtualization environment.

Amiga OS is part of "all kind"! Good spin on the OS ideas! Go satira!

I've never had a chance to try OS2; but yes, it sounds good. Agreed Amiga OS was awesome! I'm probably showing my age; but I did use all the OS's from my earlier comment except Vista; and each of those systems had some nice features that I miss.

what about HPUX and OSX?

Yes - I've spent by far the majority of my career on Unix's including HPUX and SunOS in the 80s and 90s; and mostly Linux this decade. Didn't think they'd be as relevant to the point I was trying to make (that the Idea Poster should be more specific) because it seems those OS's do run fine on at least some x86.

Here (in silicon valley) it's not that uncommon to have spent most of my time in non-windows environments, perhaps because many of the better alternatives (hpux, solaris, osx, bsd) are local.

I want Dell to offer front-panel switches on their x86 hardware, so I could key in a boot loader to read in a paper-tape copy of Lunar Lander like I used to on the DEC GT-40 (a PDP-11 processor with integral vector graphics display). But to get back on-topic (operating systems), how about Multics?

The real reason dell doesn’t offer lots of OS choice is support. Customers want full support on their system, Dell couldn’t possibly train their support staff on endless distributions of Linux, OS2, wont ever offer HPUX as its from a competing company, and OSX would likely violate a few laws and annoy Steve Jobs resulting in the bricking of your new Dell with OSX via OS update.

Another problem is driver development and testing. This will add to the cost or may limit the hardware options based on selected O.S. as seen in Dell ubuntu systems
