The most requested feature...

5600 points posted to Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies by xivulon 09/26/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

There are several proposals that basically ask the same thing: SHOW UBUNTU IN THE LIST OF OPERATING SYSTEM ON ALL MACHINES [subtract $50]. And why not, add XP to the list as well. There are also many more proposals that would be made redundant IF the above was implemented. If you add them all together that is probably the most requested feature at the moment. Yes I think many of the ideas below can be merged.

Of course not all hardware choices will go down well with Ubuntu, but you have a conflict resolution system in place to notify users that make incompatible choices, and that could easily be extended to address conflicts between hardware and operating system. The only reason not to have Ubuntu is when there are fundamental incompatibilities that cannot be addressed by swapping wireless card or video card (suspend/hibernation...). In this case show "No operating system" (no point in having "No operating system" when a free operating system is available).

So, don't hide Ubuntu in some dark corner of your website only known to geeks, give customers a REAL choice...

The idea http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/72902/Why_Cant_Dell_Put_Linux_On_Their_...
doesn't specifically state or require Ubuntu. It points out a third party that puts Linux (actually they do their own version/distro) on higher-end Dell hardware as a means to getting Linux available on more Dell systems.

Standard Ubuntu runs just fine on XPS 700 systems. Personally I'd like to see Dell treat Ubuntu the same as Windows. Then we could gauge the demand better.

Windows XP is a slightly different problem to Ubuntu. Microsoft control the distribution licences. It's Microsoft that are discontinuing Windows XP, not Dell. There's no point in Dell selling you a PC with an OS you can't activate and it would be illegal for Dell to do such a thing.

"... and many more ..." includes http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66879 ("Implemented: Ubuntu Dell is Le$$ Than Windows Dell"), which at 15950 points exceeds the popularity of all the more recent topics, including the second place 14590 points for idea 68294 (Same_discounts).

The sad thing is that Dell claims to have implemented idea 66879 whereas they clearly have not. It's frustrating to see popular ideas suggested on IdeaStorm and then languish. But it's even more frustrating when Dell says they have listened and responded to their customers while doing exactly the opposite.

Please mods, merge all those redundant "Ubuntu on Dells" ideas into one!

Along the same line, someday I wish Dell would install other versions of Linux on their computers.
For "out of the box" complete functionality, Linux Mint (Ubuntu based) beats Ubuntu, for example.
aikiwolfie
10/25/07
Mint comes with those codecs everybody in the business world gets all nervous about. Which means the best Dell could do is provide the light version. Which is a bit pointless.

Ubuntu 7.10 however is supposed to have Click'N'Run from Linspire. Which means we can buy our own legal DVD play back software.

they sell codecs with windows, why not sell legit codecs with linux also??

That's an enigma we just haven't gotten to the bottom of yet. I think Dell should have a repository for Linux based Dell software.

Ubuntu-Multimedia 7.10 [$20] <= includes legal codecs
Windows XP [$50]
Windows Vista Home Basic [$50]

I do not really like the "[subtract $50]" suggestion at the beginning of the idea. I agree that Ubuntu should not cost more than the cheapest version of Windows, but then I do not want it to cost less either. I like what this idea suggests (the URL is http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/71447/All_operating_systems_on_all_plat...), which suggests that there should be no discounts like this.

Ubuntu is free. Why shouldn't it cost less? If a customer orders a Ubuntu system they shouldn't be paying anything for the OS bar support from Canonical.

11/22/07
aikiwolfie, read the idea that the link in my last comment points to and you will see what I mean. The key words there are "Give no incentive either way". I agree and I think that there should be no incentive in either direction, in the favor of Windows or of Ubuntu.
aikiwolfie
11/23/07
So are you suggesting that we artificially over price a Ubuntu system to compensate for the fact it is free and Windows is not or cut the price of Windows PCs to compensate for the price difference between OSs?

There is no way Dell can fairly take away the incentives for choosing either OS. Windows, while expensive is the most widely used desktop OS. Ubuntu while free, more secure and more stable is still on the fringes with only a minority of users by comparison. Even if Dell treats both OSs the same as I think they should, they still can't fairly take away the plus points of either OS.
winoffice

aikiwolfie, "...they still can't take away the plus points of either OS."

I think that Windows truly does have such "plus points", but you? I thought that your opinion is that Windows has no such "plus points" and is bad in all respects!

aikiwolfie, it is not MY suggestion, it is the suggestion of markvs624. He posted that idea, and I am merely referencing his post by means of the link in one of my previous comments.

If you want Vista Basic/XP to be on the same price-point as Ubuntu, ask Miscrosoft to slash their price to zero, do not ask the end-users to pay more than they should for Ubuntu... The user decides whether the features Windows provides are worth the difference price, if Microsoft cannot compete on that basis, either they have to improve their features or drop their price. It's not up to Dell to "compensate" artificially. Whether you "like" that Ubuntu costs less than Windows or not is utterly irrelevant, it's not a matter of taste, it's a matter of cost, and that is what it is: http://www.google.com/products?q=windows+vista+basic+oem&hl=en&show=dd&scoring=p .

if it comes down to it though, i'll give my money to dell before i give it to microsoft. at least dell has bigger competition to keep them in line

Oh man most places seem to be selling it for $80+. I think the "paid for" version of SuSE is either cheaper than that or the same price. And SuSE is equally at home as a desktop OS or a server OS.

Oh and I forgot to mention. Ubuntu 7.10 (Gusty Gibbon) with legal codecs for $20. Can't complain about that. Although VLC is free and legal. Click on Applications > Add/Remove... and do a search for VLC and install it.

Apply this great idea for all countries (especially for The Netherlands :-) )

My family now wants to use Ubuntu to. I run Ubuntu about a year now and some family members are very impressed (they have really old WinXP's with lots of mallware and viruses, I want SSH and APT-GET to trouble shoot! Now I must periodically run silly programs to clean up there spyware flooded PC's), so they want Ubuntu to, on newly bought Dell PC's. Only thing is. I live in The Netherlands, and when I asked local customer support about Ubuntu they came up with a negative. Which wasn't very nice, because I really thought they sell in The Netherlands by now.

So please Dell sell in The Netherlands. And maybe (unless I found another vendor that can deliver) I buy soon (I hope!). And as last resource (they really want Ubuntu) I shall install Ubuntu myself on a Dell PC. But my family deserves certified hardware!
