OpenVPN for safer wireless networking

110 points posted to Broadband and Mobility by delluser 09/23/07

Please consider bundling OpenVPN w/ either windows or ubuntu on Dell platforms.
This software is absolutely brilliant and it works wonders on a wifi link. Perfect for bridging a "roadwarrior" to his/her office. Much more flexible than IPsec.

They pretty much do offer this. OpenVPN's in "Add/Remove Applications" in the main menu on the ubuntu systems they ship.

Well, the difficulty with OpenVPN is not installing it, it is configuring it. You can really do a lot of things but you need to understand networking and authentication/cipher basics for that.
By bundling I was thinking Dell could a) install it, b) provide a wizard to generate a 'middle of the road' configuration. There basically are a few choices to make : peer-to-peer or star topography, routed or bridged, split routing or not. Then the wizard could specify a sensible cipher type and generate certificates (or import ones).
There is a widows GUI (a tray application) that begins to provide this sort of packaging I think. To my knowledge there is no equivalent on linux (and the interaction with networking services can be a bit tricky if you want to bridge)
