Allow Major Customers to Re-Badge the Name Tag; Make Computers Look to be part of the Buyers Company.

170 points posted to Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies, Simplify IT by jorge 09/19/07

Dell offer to re-badge computers for your major customers who buy a ton of computers so they are named after the buyers company with a Dell reference included as well. For example: (only examples don't go postal on me)

McDonalds Inspiron 2000 by Dell (small type on the "by Dell")
or
GreenPeace Precision Workstation 520 by Dell

This allows large corporations/organizations to have computers tagged as being their property in a more obvious way for not only name recognition by those visiting/using but for security reasons as well (theft) and leaving the "by Dell" ending give you that signature at the end. Look you're already painting computers those awful colors so re-branding the front of computers should take more than a sticker or etch change, depending on the model.

Great marketing angle.

That would be a good way to encourage laptop theft for the purpose of idenenity theft. Someone sitting in an airport with a company name plate on the back of the LCD "Veterans administration, latitude D610 by Dell”, everyone knows these laptops have millions of names and social security numbers not encrypted. When this person uses the restroom, someone follows them in and steals it while the vistim is taking care of business. Another problem would be getting unwanted attention by people interested in getting a job or information about boeing from a an engineer trying to get some work done at starbucks

Imagine the amount of thief's they can get with that too!

Also, when is the last time you could actually read a model number off a computer from a distance? Were you using binoculars?

Then imagine how many people want "CIA Inspiron 1405 by Dell", it would sell for more!

I wasnt refering to the model, i was refering to the case badge on the back of the LCD, but even the model # would be visible in a starbucks from a walk by or from the next table. Property control stickers are generally placed on the bottom of the laptop to deter theft based on possbile content stored locally - property control stickers usually have the company name and telephone number.

This is more of a marketing angle for companies wanting to have their logo all over the place (which most do).
