Pledge to make 1420n work fully with standard Ubuntu 7.10

500 points posted to Inspiron products, Linux, Operating Systems by dara 09/08/07

I know there isn't much more time before the 7.10 release of Ubuntu (pre release named Gutsy Gibbon). I've been following a bit in ubuntuforums.org and some are optimistic about a fresh install of 7.10 enabling all the hardware on a 1420n. But I'd be much more likely to buy a 1420n now (I'm close) if Dell would promise to make every effort to get everything on this laptop as currently offered (heck, throw in bluetooth again too) working fully with the October release (and if not fully, working to get the updates onto the repositories as soon as possible.

Perhaps this plan has already been stated - if so, not prominently enough for me to have heard of it.

Why in the world would you want linux?

For the same reason you would want any other OS.

I fully realize that getting ready for Vista is not the same as getting ready for Ubuntu 7.10. For one, the Vista market is a heck of a lot bigger. But the little I've heard of Vista isn't good (we'll get stuck with it at work at some point though). So the pledge I'm asking for hopefully isn't that bad. Reading the main review on the 1420n that everybody links to on Starry Hope says that the major trouble is 3-d video and hibernate (both of which are pretty nice to have given the hardware is capable of it).

Hope to hear some longer responses to this post - I searched and didn't see anything like it when I started it. I figured it would be more popular actually.

id like to see then put a linux friendly webcam on something for a laptop

but ive been running the dev version of 7.10 aka gutsy and its really impressive for ease of use and would be fine in the hand of anyone willing to buy a linux laptop to start learning on

The vostro 1500 isn't completely working yet, too. Ubuntu 7.10 lacks sound support by default.
