Dell Vostro 1700 with Windows XP OS

210 points posted to Operating Systems, Vostro products by icpeanuts 09/05/07 **REVIEWED**

I love the Vostro 1700 and would want to buy it. One huge problem. This is a Small Business Laptop, why is the option for Windows XP Professional OS not available. I am sure there are other users out there that keeping WINDOWS XP as the OS choice is a MUST. Why not just offer it as an option, why make it so difficult for users to hunt down the drivers for the various hardware.

I was asked for a recommendation on a 17" laptop backed w/ good service, running XP. I went to Dell, saw the awsome price on the Vostro 17, unfortunately Vista only. I came out with a much more expensive XPS... Buyer delayed its choice.

I want a 17" Business machine. The 1500 and 1000 screen is too small. I do not need an XPS machine for what I use the laptop for. Dell is making this very difficult as I am looking elsewhere. I am sure other people are doing the samething. Forcing someone to choose another Expensive model because of Marketing is really bad customer relations.

Like this:

Windows XP:
None
Home Edition
Media Center
Professional

Windows Vista:
Home Basic
Home Premium
Business
Ultimate

Note that I did not include options like Linux and that is only because the idea mentions Windows exclusively, and thus I simply wish my comment to be as relevant as possible. If you read my first comment of the idea "Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!" by samb0057, you will see that I included all of the options.

So I had this chat with a Dell sales rep and he noticed the same issue and then recognized my frustration. He contacted the business department and at first they blew him off. Then, he went to a higher up in the business department and found out that Microsoft did not want windows XP on the Vostro 1700. Sounds pathetic to me on the part of Microsoft that they would not include the Vostro 1700 in the XP package. I am not sure who to blame so, shame on Dell and Microsoft for putting together a really bad deal on a very simple thing! Just give us the XP option for the Vostro 1700. For any Dell or Microsoft employee that may read this, you are losing sales because you are not offering this option!

The word Microsoft in deciding which Dell its installed on (XP) is the problem. Microsoft want to force Vista down everyones neck at any price including loss revenues, I have also had to stop people from ordering computers due to this, some are still in wait mode or bought something else, totally sad really.
