Quad Core for Inspiron Desktops Now

380 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Inspiron products by bg02446 09/04/07

I'd like to see quad core processors offered on Inspiron desktops ASAP. Quad core processors aren't terribly expensive and would be of real benefit to those of us (possibly excessive) multi-taskers.

I'm looking for a quiet quad-core system that'll hold 4 hard drives + DVD drive. [a development machine for a DBA]. Extra points if it comes with No OS or Linux. An inspiron like this Idea requests could be a good match.

Inspiron desktops?

@tleavit: "Inspiron desktops?"

Yeah, that's extremely confusing. I think they're going for a Vostro and HP with their new and even worse named Virtus must have been paid off by either the Viiv or the Vista company to all get together and name new stuff after the letter V. Perhaps they read too much Harry Potter. If that's the plan, that leaves Inspiron for pre-vista or pre-viiv capable systems?

That is real funny, jervis961. I do not know why Dell Linux Geek Edition is included in the list, though.

I have Vista and consider myself a geek... I see it as a positive term but I guess you se it as a negative. I think over the years "geek" has evolved from being the guy with the pocket protector and taped glasses to just meaning someone who is really good at computers.

@jervis961: "I think over the years "geek" has evolved from being the guy with the pocket protector "

The evolution goes back further than that; but indeed both definitions you mentioned are valid ones. I think the other guys were referring to the #1 dictionary definition,

http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/geek
Main Entry: geek
Pronunciation: 'gEk
Function: noun
Etymology: probably from English dialect geek, geck fool, from Low German geck, from Middle Low German
1 : a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake
2 : a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked
3 : an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity

But drifting back to seriousness; I could imagine geek versions of both Linux and Windows (where the geek versions are mostly 3rd-party-software-free); in contrast to versions targeted for less computer-savvy people (where pre-configured security software [Antivirus for Windows; pre-configured tripwire for Linux] & pre-installed multimedia codecs [WinDVD for windows, LinDVD for Linux]) would be appreciated.
