Wireless mesh networking as options

210 points posted to Broadband and Mobility, New Product Ideas by badblood 09/03/07

Provide IEEE 802.11b support using a Wi-Fi “Extended Range” chip set to form a wireless mesh network. Whenever the laptop is powered on it will participate in a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) with each node operating in a peer-to-peer fashion with other laptops it can hear, forwarding packets across the cloud. If a computer in the cloud has access to the Internet—either directly or indirectly—then all computers in the cloud are able to share that access.

Many organisations using mobile offices and setting up relief operations will benefit from such a resource.

You're asking for 802.11s which the standard has not been finalized yet. 802..11s will probably be an upgrade to your OS software, it is not for certain that it will need new hardware. Look to your OS vendor for this solution, Dell doesn't control it.

Nice idea. Must have option to not autoconnect and to poweroff to save power and appease airlines/FCC/FAA.
