For toddlers

creat a computer that is simple for a 3year old. One that does not have so many keys maybe your basic alphabet and numbers. It could come in fun colors or cartoon theme. And the computer can come with educational programs and also you can upgrade.

Let him/her play with the full keyboard. You'd be surprised how fast they know which keys do something and which ones not to push. My 3-year-old learned many of his letters from this flash game:
http://www.sesameworkshop.org/sesamestreet/games/flash.php?contentId=9495524< I'd vote against the "fun colors"/ "cartoon theme" - my kids tired quikly from things they saw as "toys" and wants to play on a computer "like daddy's".

Totally agree on the educational programs. His current favorite is this painting program: http://www.tuxpaint.org/screenshots/ - works on most OS's.

The only problematic key when he's on a windows computer is that one that pops up a menu and removes the focus from the application he's using. I'm tempted to pop that key off the keyboard.

The #1 feature I'd like to see in a toddler computer is a spillproof keyboard.

Yup - hope it doesn't get merged, tho - since at least one person voted up the other one and down this one - so there must be some distinction.

Umm just wondering have you seen what kids in countries other than the US are doing with PCs. I mean there are kids (more than the US) that can build a computer at age 5 in other countries or do some extensive programming.

Also I must say that three-year-olds are preschoolers really, they were grouped with the preschoolers in the daycare where I used to work. They got to play frogger on the ancient Apple E systems we had... Yes this was in 1999.
