Notebook minus monitor minus keyboard

50 points posted to New Product Ideas by smoe 08/23/07

Hm. Right. A portable monitor would be nice. That would not need to be larger than my mobile's, though. But mostly I have one whereever I go. Also there are keyboards in abundance everywhere.

The machine I am looking for is fast, has plenty of memory, solid state disks. It is a bit like the Mac Mini, ... hm ... I do not even want the CD slot. It should be easily plugable to transport it between work and home.

If I wanted to do such today then I would probably need to prepare virtual machines and dump their states on a USB stick. It would be a different feeling.

You're looking for a minimal, very small computer (say, that fits in a pocket) which plugs into a docking station providing the keyboard/mouse and monitor connections. ?

Its not a notebook anymore when you take everything else away.

One second reason I like this -- if I get the (optional) portable monitor and external keyboard -- I think I'd like the ergonomics of this many-piece-portable better than a laptop that forces a rather uncomfortable cramped posture.

Hmm.... interesting terminology question. If it's about 8.5 x 11 - I'd say it's still a "notebook" but clearly not a "laptop".

But if you put it under the desk it's certainly not a "desktop" PC - especially if it's shaped roughly like a notebook.

If I can't put it under the desk it loses a lot of the appeal of having the computer part separate from the monitor and keyboard. A notebook sized (so it fits in standard briefcases) computer I could put under a desk with notebook sized (same reason) external monitor would be interesting for sales presentations.
