Dell and Ubuntu

I think Dell should do more with Ubuntu to optimize the whole OS for Dell computers.

Replace "Ubuntu" with "Windows" and you will see that this idea doesn't make much sense.

The thing that everyone keeps asking for is simply a choice of 'stock' Ubuntu pre-installed instead of Windows on any PC Dell makes. I don't need support, but would like a way to get warranty service when the PC HW breaks without having to reimage the disk, or keep a useless partition around.

i think it is a good idea. any improvements dell makes to packages in ubuntu will benefit the same packages in any operating system. if dell adds a feature to gaim(pidgin) or adds a driver to linux, these changes will be added to gaim(pidgin) or linux on all systems where they are installed.

i see no reason why dell/ubuntu should be different from the standard cds. dell could however try to optimise the standard cds to work with dell computers.

Suggestion: when your hardware breaks, boot to your resource cd, run the 32-bit diagnostic, and call Dell to tell them which piece of hardware failed. If you have an error code from their diagnostics, they should replace the parts you need under warranty regardless of which OS you're running. At least, one would hope so.

The last time I called in for support, I didn't have to do anything within Windows, I just made my optical drive spin up until the disc started rattling and told the tech "Listen to this." Replacement drive arrived the next day.

It would be even better if Dell would optimize their hardware to work better with the OS.

I would like Dell to sign up to resolve any hardware issue resulting from Ubuntu running on their PCs by requiring their vendors to release documentation to the open-source community to provide any missing or partially functioning drivers. Dell should act more like Microsoft and threaten to make life difficult for all who don't play by their rules.
