"I detest the 'leaked' design of XPS M1730 and will wait for it to be redesigned."

410 points posted to XPS products by lorax1284 08/17/07

If you DO NOT LIKE the design of the XPS 1730, and are willing to give Dell the time to 'fix it', you should PROMOTE this thread, as a vote AGAINST the design, but willingness to WAIT for it to be improved.

If you LIKE the design do NOT vote.

If you are UNWILLING TO WAIT for the design to be reworked (you will buy another notebook instead of either this design or waiting for a revision) DEMOTE the post.

As someone have already commented, Dell XPS 1730 looks like a vostro 1700 repainted here and there in Red.. Horrible...

Dell can see by the "promote" and "demote" indicators that a certain subset of XPS fans (specifically, those craving a 17" WUXGA model) are willing to wait for Dell to get it right... and that another subset may not be as forgiving / patient, so they need to get it right the first time in the future.

Their sales of the XPS M1730 (or lack thereof, if it is released looking as it does in the leaked pictures we've seen) will provide the third data point: this thread may tell dell (f lots of people "promote" it), that it may not be too late to adjust the design and release the "M1740" or whatever.

It goes without saying that a 17" design in the style of the M1330 would be a smash hit, so it befuddles me that they would forego that design... but maybe if we just let them know "Put the huge ugly monster down and step away. Good. Now go develop the M1330-style 17" notebook, and when it's done, come out holding it up. We'll still be here."

Agree -- one step in the right direction with the 1330, then several steps in the opposite direction with unnecessarily bulky and ugly notebooks, if the leaked pictures are true... XPS 1730 and Precision M6300. :(

...here's another pic:

I imagine this is one possible configuration option... note the different texture on the LED panels, and the "piano black" finish on the screenback: far superior to the combination shown in other pics.... I have a hard time calling it "fugly", but under that lid, the backlit keyboard's still white, I reckon.

I'm afraid those preview pics weren't a hoax after all. Both on Youtube and Yahoo people found a 1730 teaser video posted. Check it

now that the dust has settled (the pics are real!) I can clarify the "redesign" statement:

Black keyboard instead of white. Backlit or not, it has to be black.

Reconfigure port locations. Not likely to happen as it would basically be an entire mobo / case redesign... for me, the port configuration is the killer. That port configuration and no docking station = OOTQ (out of the question). The question being "what Santa Rosa 17" 1920 x 1200 notebook will I buy?"

For Some Reason i think dell released pics of a ugly one so we would all be curious and so what on what the actual product would look like.

Now I think the XPS M1730 just might be available in a mostly light-coloured case / enclosure / 'skin", so at least the light-coloured backlit keyboard will not clash too terribly.

This machine is absolutely beautiful and it can handle any game, from BioShock maxed out to COH opposing forces maxed out. When i first saw the 1730 online i didn't care for the design but when i opened it up i was totally amazed, the machine looks absolutely stunning, then at night the illumination is amazing. Please someone with this system please write back. Way to go Dell
