Bring back Dell 1.0.

10 points posted to Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Dell Web Site by jmxz 08/17/07

Ever since Dell's former CEO announced Dell 2.0 people have been trying to figure out what the heck Rollins meant by it

This morning at a company event in New York City, Dell CEO Kevin Rollins introduced what he called "Dell 2.0" (we'll forgive the cliche of putting "2.0" after just about anything to indicate something's new and improved...). [but then the article rambles and doesn't really explain what Dell2.0 is]
and even when people did attempt to define Dell 2.0, the results are less than flattering.
If Dell really has a master Dell 2.0 plan...you'd assume Rollins - the plan's architect - would serve as the perfect chap to execute on the agenda....So, that leaves you thinking that Dell 2.0 is little more than the Direct Model pig with services lipstick and cheery customer service talk that still has more of an Indian twang than a Texas drawl.
Dell 1.0, on the other hand, was a company we all loved and respected.
Dell 1.0 consistently won Top Customer Satisfaction Honors (well ahead of Apple)
Dell 1.0 had excellent Linux support "across its full product line" (until 2002 or so). and
Dell 1.0 was so far ahead of the competition that they felt comfortable joking about it.

And now we have Dell 2.0 - characterized by accounting scandals, poor customer satisfaction, backwards progress on it's linux models, and deceptive advertising.

Bring back the Dell 1.0 that we all loved and trusted. And if that's not possible, see if you can quickly move on to Dell 2.1 or Dell 3.0 and try to earn trust with one of those.

Dell 2.0 is already lost.

I knew .chris would take objection to this.

Yeah - I saw how "excited" .chris was about Web 2.0 in that other thread. I don't think he'll be able to control himself when Vista 2.0 comes out.

I don't know about anyone else but I keep thinking Henry Rollins when I see Rollins in print.

Dell 2.0, needs a Service Pack badly!

Can't wait till Dell 2.1 comes out.

Forgot, they won't go back in time so can't go to 1.0 there's no uninstall, we have to eat it and hope for 2.1

Whatever. Jorge hates this idea and thus this idea is good.

I just don't see them going back because they're stuck and they need to show progress or movement ahead. They could re-spin 1.0 to be the 2.1, but to save face they need to do something new and innovative or they'll have their nuts in a vise (again).

@jorge:
Seems Henry would have been a better pick, no?

Seriously, "going back" is not completely impossible. It's not about software which has to improve - more or less - with every release. When you change something in they way you are doing business, it might not be for good. And then, of course, it can make sense to, yes, go back.

I remember how people told me how they like Dell quality and service. Are those times necessarily of the past?

Its possible for us, but them? They already changed the management team from 1.0, the 2.0's ruined any good they had, personnel alone will take time to re-implement (the right way), then what do you do with the people who are still there from 2.0? (especially those who believe in 2.0?)

The Michael is back, at least. ;-)

@jorge: "They already changed the management team from 1.0, the 2.0's ruined any good they had, personnel alone will take time to re-implement"

Sounds like some of the 2.0 personnel is gone: http://www.crn.com/it-channel/201800702
Dell Chief Financial Office Donald Carty acknowledged that some executives were fired as a result of accounting improprieties found during a lengthy internal investigation at the company
...
Carty declined three separate times to say whether all of the Dell executives involved in the matter had been purged from the company

Optimistically it looks like we're already at Dell 2.1.

Lets hope so, the only concern I have is for the 2.0 holdouts who knew but didn't say yet believed in the 2.0 philosophy.
