M1730 should look more like the M1330

770 points posted to XPS products by saleemohaib 08/16/07

I saw the pics of the upcoming Dell XPS M1730 laptop. I was really disappointed. I was not expecting something so ugly from Dell. By the way you can view the pics on this link:
Not for the faint-hearted people. Get ready before you go to this link and for those who have seen it before no need to see them again ;)

I also saw the M1330 and it look really nice. I think it might save Dell a lot of time and effort if they just made a 17' version of M1330 and call it M1730. Because I want a Santa Rosa XPS 17' laptop soon :)

I think including a 2 Megapixel camera on the M1730 would also be nice and color choice would be appreciated as available for M1330.

Looking forward to your coments.

By the way 'Dell' really appreciate the IdeaStrom.

Kgreek = Koniththegreek. He's a Dell kiosk employee who believes the photo of the 1730 is a fake.

Oh and he's "peeved" at all the threads that relate to the fugly 1730.

Hi benjesuit,
Like the word "fugly" and I don't know if it was fake or not, but it was fugly :)

Are you sure it was fake. I saw new images with more angles. For me its hard to believe that this is photoshoped. If it is someone has really made it look real.
Check out here what I mean:

Today is the 27-08-2007 no signs of the XPS M1730 on Dell website yet. According to some forecasts it was going to be launched today. Lets see when does it happen.

Just LOOK at the three cables jutting out the side of the pic kyliemanders posted!

DVI to VGA converter on the rear left side, USB on the rear-right side, and audio out on the FRONT LEFT side. FRONT LEFT for heaven's sake! With no docking station available, this is heinous.

I mean, I saw the pictures of the port configuration, and thought "hmmm... video on the side... not ideal", but seeing it like this really nails it: Na Ga Da!

Every time the machine is "undocked" you have to deal with all those cables strewn across the desk. That's the last straw right there. It'll look like a bioluminescent spider (an ugly one!) on my desk. Thank god for this pic, because if I had purchased one, and then with great excitement plugged in all those wires, having to clear 6 inches on either side of the thing for all the cables, well... I think my neighbours would have been able to hear the muted trombone "Wahhh Wahhhhh" sound.

The reason why I'd consider the extra expense of an XPS in the first place is that I am a power user and take a "no compromises" approach to computing. No compromises includes connectivity and design. I'd have to make far too many compromises to decide on the XPS M1730.

Ok. So where does that leave me. Using my XPS Gen 2 until something worthy surfaces.

Redesigning the M1730 to "look like the M1330" is out of the question. The M1730 is done.

But what's not out of the question is an entirely distinct model line into which the M1330 could be repositioned, and to which a 17" model could be added. At this point, the elegance of the industrial design of the M1330 is undermined by the XPS brand. And a successor to the M2010 could tag along with it.

I saw a video where the proud papa who was design lead on the M1330 discussed some of the design issues and achievements. The poor man must be having to disavow anything to do with the M1730 at the weekly "notebook designers club" meetings.

I'd take the M1330 out of the XPS line altogether and create a "boutique notebook" line (pardon the word "boutique", but nothing else seems to fit) where form AND function go hand in hand.

Then, you can let the XPS be all function and form isn't so important.

Well said Lorax. I agree 100%.

Well I guess Ideastrom doesn't work. We told them in every possible way that the M1730 s__ks, but they still launched it. Lets see if dell made the right financial choice. Its certainly not a good choice for the XPS image and for customer satisfaction.

This machine is absolutely beautiful and it can handle any game, from BioShock maxed out to COH opposing forces maxed out. When i first saw the 1730 online i didn't care for the design but when i opened it up i was totally amazed, the machine looks absolutely stunning, then at night the illumination is amazing. Please someone with this system please write back. Way to go Dell

I think it has a lot of nice features, but they took away the design, I loved the 1710 if they put kept that design and added the new keyboard and the logitech lcd (on top of the keyboard) to it. Then it would be perfect
