Plastic 3.5in insert inside empty 5in bays

170 points posted to Dimension products by jonsmirl 08/11/07

Could you make a plastic insert that sits inside the empty 5in bays and lets them be used as internal 3.5in bays? Then ship this insert inside all of the empty 5in bays? I like how the disk carriers are screwless now and just clip onto the drives.

My Dim9200 has six SATA connectors and two internal 3.5in bays. There is no simple way to mount four 4.5in drives in the box without buying mounting hardware. Drives are so cheap now I want to run RAID 10 on desktop machines.

This would have been a really good idea about 6 months ago.

Unfortunately, the new Inspiron & Vostro desktops no longer use disk carriers.
They have gone back to bog standard screw mounts for the HDD's etc.

The new units, while actually much more standard than past units, exude "cheap" all over when you take the hood off.

I've been told that Dell already makes this part as a 5th drive bay adapter for Precision boxes. It is a plastic part that fits into a 5.25in drive bay and has vents on the front. It includes a blue clip-on 3.5in drive carrier. Now all we need is for this to become a standard part or at least an option when configuring boxes other than Precisions.

Getting it from Dell Parts for $20 plus $5 shipping is way over priced for $1 worth of plastic. I can order a similar part from Newegg for $2.00.

The idea here is to make things easier for the customer.
