Stackable PC--easy to upgrade

170 points posted to Desktops by av1945 08/10/07

How about a PC that is made up of different sessions that place on top of each the (like bricks). The base section would contain the CPU, GPU and SPU. The next one could contain the HDD and the next could contain a disc drive and so on. If the user wanted to upgrade their HDD, al they have to do is buy a new 'block' and clip it in place!

Sony did that for a while, sort of, it still was one piece but semi-modular so each was in its own compartment.

there is another thread about it...i have a link to the actual site referenced: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/pcs/dell-xcs-snap+on-pc-concept-185141.php

It requires agreement of different hardware vendors on a single standard, and this is almost impossible! For example sockets of AMD and Intel CPUs must be the same or you'll be stuck with your decision forever!
The idea is great by itself but almost impossible to achieve correctly.

Just looked at the Dell XCS, only six slots? It should have more, I'd like to see it truly modular and be able to add as many as you need.

i think with the XCS, it is just a concept of what it could look like. it could very well be expandable, just cant tell. it looks pretty cool though

It looks very good the xcs, futuristic but the price tag will/would be hefty!

ehh, it might not be too pricey. tech prices always go down as technology improves, but you never know

I recently patented a stackable system # 7239509. The modules snap together like batteries into battery operated tools, like Makita or Dewalt. It allows for individual power supply and and "infinite" number of modules. I don't think that the technical issues should be a problem. Stack old hard drives or detach to take with you and snap in at home or work. It's very green as less components end up in land fills. It also allows for complete custimization of your system and allows for new devices to be adapted. Many other benefits as well. If Dell would be interested I would be glad to work with them as I have always been pleased with the quality of my Dell PCs and Laptop. I had 10 of them at my internet gaming center "CombatCyber Cafe" and we had minimal issues, also the ones we did have were quickly resolved. So if my idea was to get to market I would like it to be by a company that I feel would do it justice. I am very reasonable and am looking to be able to pursue more of my ideas and hopefully bring them to market.

If Dell is interested please contact me by e-mail.
Thanks
