Better selection of Linux notebooks

2310 points posted to Linux by kasoroth 08/07/07

An Ubuntu notebook with higher specs would be nice. At a minimum, I'd want a decent monitor option (1920x1200 resolution), a decent NVIDIA video card option, and gigabit ethernet. I'd also prefer an AMD processor, and a price point about $50 less than an equivalent Windows system.

This is especially important considering that Dell recently dropped the 1505N that I was planning on buying in a few days.

I had been thinking about getting that system too, but I've been waiting to see if they add a system with a bigger, higher resolution monitor. They added one with a smaller monitor, and now they got rid of the 1505N. I'd be happy to support Dell's Ubuntu experiment (actually I've been running Ubuntu on an old Inspiron 8100 with a 1600x1200 screen for a few years now already), and I'm getting ready to buy a new system, but I want something that I can comfortably read PDFs on zoomed to show the whole page at once. Less than 1200 vertical resolution just isn't good enough for this.

I agree on the part that more powerful Linux notebooks would be needed.

The single cheap laptop which Dell currently offers with Ubuntu in Germany (6400n) is out of question for any power-user.

Shortcomings of the 6400n:

* Too limited set of selectable CPUs: only models with 1MB L2 cache, fastest it the T2130, quite bad.

* display resolution only 1280x800, I've had that years ago, anything below 1400x1050 is backwards for me for sharpness for doing photo work, the best, like WUXGA like in the D830 is what I want.

The Latitude D830, based on Intel's latest Santa Rosa ranges from 849 Euro (low-end) to 1.664 Euro (high-end) in Germany (without support), so it convers quite a range.

The D830 would also bee a good addition to the Ubuntu offerings in the US.
