What happened to the E1505N on the Ubuntu page?

260 points posted to Linux by ubondell 08/03/07

When I go to the secret Ubuntu portal (www.dell.com/open) I no longer see the E1505N which had a 15" display. The only laptops on that page is a 1420N which at best can have a 14.1" display @ 1440x900. I am trying to replace an old Inspiron 8100 with a 1600x1200 display that I run Ubuntu on and there doesn't seem to be anything in the Linux choices that matches it. Of course there is the 1520 on the main page, but I would really like a pre-installed Linux than having to do it myself. Why isn't the top-of-the-line Dell laptop that Michael Dell has Ubuntu running on listed on the open page. If he can get one configured with Ubuntu, so should I.

Uh, Chris. If you had read my posting before your moronic reply you would have seen that I am already an Ubuntu user and have been for a few years. To be honest I don't miss Windows at all and I will probably buy a new laptop from another vendor if Dell can't get their Linux story straight. The short list of reasons I use Ubuntu are: my laptop runs faster, all the application I need are built-in packages (or run under Wine), and for the stuff I do with my laptop the tools in Linux (Perl, shell scripts, gcc) trump anything that was available in Windows. So you can stick with Windows, I have moved on to something better for my needs; and will do the same for my choice of computer supplier if Dell doesn't provide a real choice of computers running Linux. To be honest I don't see why people who prefer Windows get into such a bother over my choice of OS. It's not like my choice is lessening your choices, and to be really honest if some of those people tried an Ubuntu LiveCD, which would let them run Ubuntu from CD/memory, they might be surprised how little reason there is to be locked into Windows. It also makes a good platform to go in to a Windows filesystem and touch things that Windows doesn't want you to see/modify (it's all just data to Linux ;-).

From the Direct2Dell update: http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/08/07/23816.aspx< makes no sense to me, what about you guys?

Recently, some IdeaStorm readers asked why we discontinued the Inspiron E1505N in the United States. The answer is that we transitioned to the Inspiron 1420N, which is a product that we do not offer in the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

What kind of an explanation is that? Sounds like a bait and switch statement.

No, I install it on everything they sell even if they don't "stamp" it (always have), you still need to do more reading.

Comment posted from a Dell running Unix on a system they don't sell as such.

You are the one making odd ball assumptions on people when you don't know much.

Just re-read your first comment as proof.

The Excuse doesn't seem to add up, uk and European buyers can't buy from the USA dell ubuntu store....... so removing a product from the USA store because it can't be brought in Europe makes so little sense.

We want to see dell expanding there models of computers with ubuntu not limiting it.

Exactly! Thanks for reading gabz, at least I'm not the only one who saw that.

I agree Jorge. Can I get that 1420N with a 15" display screen? No you say, then they shouldn't sell it as a replacement for the E1505N. The replacement for the E1505N would be a 1520N. I suspect there are slow sales of the 1420, so Dell marketing said to slap an 'N' on it and sell it to that Ubuntu crowd and don't give them a 1520N until we've cleared them all out.

That doesn't make any sense. They transitioned to the 1420 in the US, because they don't offer it in the UK. In other words, they did what was needed to make it more difficult to expand Linux elsewhere?

There are so many reasons to conclude that we are being jerked around. If you choose the Dell UK site you will see that there is a 6400n (don't know why the lower case n). There used to be a 6400 in the US 'small business' models that was identical to the 'home/home office' E1505. So Dell offers a 15" notebook (6400n) in the UK, but in the US the identical 15" model (E1505) is no longer available. My guess is that the UK one will disappear and be replaced by a 1420n as soon as it sells out. The real thing to notice is that there are no additional models being added to either the US or UK site. I wonder if Ballmer is using threats or cash to make this happen? Maybe Dell_admin1, or someone with more direct access, can get us an answer that's better than the one Cosh was offered.
