Dell Televisions

40 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) by babob1 08/01/07

Just a quick idea….
I understand that Dell is getting out of the TV business, but why would we not get back into it, if we are going to have retail exposure at such places as Wal-Mart and Sam's? It seem that our low cost TV's would be a perfect fit. It also seems that with a TV unlike a PC, the related support costs would be much less.

Example: We could put these units in the retail setting with either a 1 yr or 90 day warranty. Wal-Mart usually sells it's own extended warranty service, so from a long term maintenance standpoint we would have very little exposure after POS. This would also provide an excellent opportunity for additional advertising, incremental sales, etc. A small pamphlet or flyer with related Dell items could be included in each box.
Unlike a PC where fist time home buyers are typically higher maintenance and usually cost a company more in support related issues, a TV is considered more of a disposable item for the most part. You would also limit issues surrounding latest and greatest technologies (product sitting on the shelf due to relevant "newer" technology). Unlike a PC, a television is not held under the same scrutiny. When a new model comes out it is typically viewed simply as the "New 2008 model" replacing the "Older 2007". A PC would seem to be more volatile in that aspect.
All in all it would seem that we would be able to give greater exposure to the Dell name and increase market share in the retail (home) space.
