Try to get OSX on Dell machines

-70 points posted to Operating Systems by manu08 07/11/07

I know this is a VERY LONG shot but still no harm in posting it up because I'm sure many other people out there might actually agree with this.

Dell should try to partner with Apple to run OSX on Dell machines. Dell might have to come up with a few new machines & make them OSX specific but still, I think it would definitely be a lot better, especially if people wanted OSX but didn't adore the Apple products, or prefererd a different size/type of product that Dell already offered but wanted OSX, right now they'd have no choice but to go with Apple. Also, this would possibly increase Apple's market share for the OS industry thereby making Microsoft worry a little more so that they get up & actually develop OS's the consumers want/need without all the bugs & errors. This would start an actual competition where the industry on the whole would benefit by better & cheaper OS's. Not to mention the gain the consumer will obtain.

Open Source fellas, Lepard is 90% right, making a puter an user friendly tool for non-geeks. We can do it too, no need to beg Apple for crums. Let us start with Ubuntu and add some good stuff to it. Why do we still need to use "Save-as", it is easy to get rid of it in both Windows and Linux and have the system add a new version each time user hits "save" button and keep full historey in an ADB, and do automatic backups of important data on several locations. Every new feature in the new OS X is worth stealing and improving.

Why would Apple sell their os to another company when they can have the entire market for it on their own hardware so that they can make more green.

CHECK OUT DREAMLINUX (WWW.DREAMLINUX.ORG).

IT LOOKS AN AWFUL LOT LIKE OSX.

Yes maybe it *looks* like OSX but does it work the same? Is it prone to viruses? Does it have an equal alternative to 99% of softwares offered for Windows? Ubuntu is where OSX was 5 - 8 years back if you know what I mean. By getting OSX on Dell machines, its market share will increase by a significant amount. This will increase competition in the industry & Microsoft will feel a lot more threatened than they feel right now & will start producing better OS's. From all of this, at the end, the customers (us) will benefit greatly by cheaper & better products. The reason Windows is the most popular OS worldwide is because it is offered by every manufacturer allowing a majority of users access to Windows. If OSX was offered by every manufacturer as an alternative to Windows I'm almost certain OSX market share will pick up. Apple by not letting this through is limiting its market.

Why would you want to try to get OS X on a Dell computer? Why the hell should Apple go to tremendous and unnecessary lengths to build massive amounts of new drivers for PC hardware? So that Apple fans can complain about it? So that Dell fans can complain about it not being available on XYZ configuration?

If you want OS X, get a God-damn Mac!!

*** IMPLEMENTED ***

It's been done guys, but you just have to buy OS X and load it

cosh read my previous comment. I think I've listed about 4 reasons why I want OSX on Dell machines. Btw, what hardware difference is there between a Macbook & a Windows-based notebook? I think there is no difference, so don't talk out of your ass for no reason. Don't like the idea, get over it & move on!
And, yes I will be getting a Mac once Leopard comes out.
reg that link didn't work.
I don't think Dell even looks at the ideas posted on this website, maybe just the two or three most popular ones. Any point of all of this, honestly?

LINK: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Knowledge_Base<Do I need Apple hardware to run Mac OS X?

Not anymore.
Projects such as OSx86 have succeeded in allowing the Intel-based version of Mac OS X to run on non-Apple hardware largely by bypassing the TPM in software.
The "Trusted Platform Module," or TPM, is a computer chip embedded inside Intel-based Macs to prevent the Intel-based version of Mac OS X from running on non-Apple hardware. (during installation of Mac OS X, Mac OS X interfaces with the TPM. If Mac OS X finds that the TPM doesn't exist, Mac OS X refuses to install or run.)
In building your "Hackintosh" however, you may want to keep as close to the hardware configuration of Intel-based Macs for the best compatibility. Intel Macs use (or have used) either a Core Solo, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, or Xeon processor. For graphics cards, Intel Macs have seen Intel's GMA950; ATI's Mobility Radeon X1600, Radeon X1600, and Radeon X1900 XT; and nVidia's GeForce 7300GT, 7600GT, 8600M GT or Quadro FX4500.

even if apple allowed this type of open sourse they would restrict dell to conform to thier standards, white over laid in clear plastic. Im sure threre would be a battle over what symbol would go on the case a little sticker insignia stateing desinged for apple osx leopard somewhere next to the intel or amd badge. I'm sure that is something that alot of people would have a demand for.. Maybe if dell would design there systems with the nessisary equipment to install the osx on i'm sure apple wouldnt mind someone purchasing a copy to install it on there pc. They already support it vice versa... I'm sure a tpm wouldnt be all that difficult to impliment...maybe just work on dell to make sytstems with the tpm embedded...

I don't think this can happen overnight, but here's someone who does prefer such an idea (albeit just because of the weight)

Which Operating System Wins? Macs Could Make an Enterprise Move
http://www.cio.com/article/41140/17< three months of experimentation and comparison,
Halamka concluded that his dream machine is a Dell D420 notebook that runs OS X. Unfortunately, such a machine doesn't currently exist out of the box.

Apple won't allow it. If they had been more successful they would be a worse monopoly than Microsoft.

I think he says we because there are a number of wana be Mac Fan Boys on the forum. They just can't afford Apples prices. From what I know of OS X, it's no better than Linux and a lot more expensive. I'd rather have Linux. But on the plus side for OS X, there is better support for commercial software titles. So if you absolutely must have software Photoshop but don't want Windows then Apple is your only option.

So go buy a Mac.

if you want Apple to be less expensive , ask them to decrease price. Liking an OS is accepting as well , the disadvantages, as the high price as well.
