Dell offer a No-OS option in {insert your country here} for all possible computer systems you offer.

950 points posted to Linux, Operating Systems by jorge 07/11/07

Dell offer a No-OS option in{insert your country here}! We also want to have the option of having (or is it not to have) No-OS as an option when buying a computer!

Everyone fill in your own {insert your country here}.

If this doesn't work then create your own idea, it worked for Linux, why not No-OS?

Update: Added all possible computer systems offered by Dell.

Dell already offers a number of systems without an operating system installed on the hard drive. (For example, in the U.S., we have the N-Series.)

@jorge: Furthermore, it sounds like they want requests for each individual model where you might want No OS:.

(based on the comments from Dell under this idea http://ideastorm.com/article/show/67329 )
Re: no OS on other models - you might want to pick a model you'd want to see added to Dell's n-series, and then post an idea specifically saying that. (unless you already have) Just a thought.

Updated accordingly. Thanks, I guess I forgot that comment. Funny how somedays the idea is just not there even though the concept is right in front of us.

Who needs an OS to see if it works? Not me. What do you think people who build their own computers do? There is no pre-installed OS for those computers is there. Heck how does Dell put a computer together? Installs the OS first then add the motherboard and CPU?

Come on man, without the hardware the OS is nothing.

Very True..

future_maker:

An OS is not a decent test vector for any part of a computer.

If testing a complete system was the goal, booting a memory checker (memtest86) and a hard drive checker (badblocks) from removable storage would be far more comprehensive than running any OS. Indeed any test that covers testing writes to the hard disk would wipe out any OS that was installed there.

Joge and jmxz, good points indeed. But, I just wander how can a lowly windows user like me can know that what I bought (if I ever again buy non-Dell ;-) is working. What I mean, say I buy NOS puter put my OS on it and peripheral X is not functioning. Did I put a wrong driver or X has a bad chip? If it comes with any OS I can run it make sure it works, wipe the HD clean and proceed with myOS install knowing that HW is very likely OK. (Yes, I know a driver in one OS can hide an internal problem that my OS's driver will choke on.) Troubleshooting HW issues is not my kind of fun, machine is just a tool not entertainment.

Thanks again for clearifying testing issues, you are absolutelly right that qualtiy control goes a bit beyond of kicking the tires. But I like to have a chance to kick some tire ;-)

I can't resist the half-joking answer "boot from a Ubuntu Live CD" and see if the hardware works.

I don't know if Windows lets you download a live CD version of that OS for $0 to let you see if it works specifically with Windows, tho.

@future_maker: if you bought a No-OS computer you'd be forced to learn how to do it and empower yourself in the process! Then you can gain insight into mastering you computer not the other way around.

Sorry Jorge, I am too busy mastering the Universe ;-) However if mastering your computer is entertaining to you, you go gi... boy. But enough joking let's stay on subject. If enugh people wants NOS computers (to save the step of uninstalling a free OS) great, Dell is selling those and that's that. As long as nobody who buys a computer gets a nasty surprise when he/she turns it on, everything is good. For most people a computer is just a tool.... unlaess ia made by Apple, then it is a cool tool.

Sell PCs with no OS

I think many people would want to choose the OS they like for their PCs (desktop or notebook). This could be another Linux distribution (other than Ubuntu) or the OS somebody has just written. I think it is not fair to force people to buy a particular model with a particular OS. I think the OS should be optional. You buy the computer and there are options for OSs. You can choose MS products or a factory-installed Linux or maybe just buy the computer without any particular OS. After all, Dell is a computer producer.
Dear Dell!
Please sell me a computer! I would take care of the OS.

p.s. It will make clear how much the customers are paying for the OS.

Until Dell responds to one of the NoOS ideas (on direct2dell or ideasinaction or better by offering it across all systems & countries) I'd rather they didn't merge it.

I strongly suspect they have a list of "already looked at that" ideas. While I can't imagine why they didn't notice the NoOS ideas before and respond to them earlier, somehow they didn't - and if merged this will get lost too.

Hmm... since you voted against this one, when it gets merged I guess that'll mean you'll be counted as a vote against the original NoOS idea too?

If the idea isn't popular why are there so many dupes? Why do we keep talking about it? Why is it mentioned anytime a Ubuntu vs Vista price comparison is done? Why?

@jmxz: I'm just sick of the dupes, maybe 50 ideas on fixing this and well we're still on square one. If its not fixed I'm going on a dupe war very soon!

I'm not bothered at all by this being a duplicate - it should be voted for all the same, for two reasons:

1) Nobody ever sees old ideas except the regulars. Or this wouldn't have been posted in the first place. We need this so that all the people who would vote for it if they could see it, can.

2) When duplicates are merged, I'm not sure what happens to the votes. So if you demote this it could end up being a demote overall even if you promoted the one it gets merged into. Who knows? Nobody knows. Not even dell_admin1.

3) Dell are too ******* incompetent to pay attention to this simple idea despite the number of times we've posted it. So let the storm roll!

@davmcn: "annoying"

What's more annoying -
new users not wading through all the old ideas
or Dell not responding to this no matter how many people vote for it, ask for it, comment on it, etc.

dell should really do this. it would be great to have a list of options under operating systems starting with "no operating system (0€)" and pop-ups or similar to inform the customer which bits of hardware work with which operating system.

it's the only way the gnu-community will ever accept a first-tier oem. until dell does this, it is clear where the loyalties of this company lie.

i also wonder why anybody would vote against this. if you want to buy a computer from dell with an operating system, then buy one! the real problem is to be found elsewhere: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Comes_vs_Microsoft_Petition_Shows_How_Microsoft_Bl...

I saw at hp site they offer some (most) computers even laptops with the option of free-dos, for you living in USA your choice is pretty simple buy hp not dell. In latinoamerica however is not as easy you can't simply find offers with linux or a non-windows system. I would like to invite you to say DELL "I am not going to buy you any computers, because HP offer is better".
I must say I am gonna buy to whoever sell me computers with linux.
