Dell's own Linux OS

-520 points posted to Linux, Operating Systems by rehtneug 07/06/07

Dell should develop it's own Linux based OS. Allow the open source community to provide drivers and any other software necessary. Partner with open source groups and provide resources to allow further development of necessary apps, such as OpenOffice.

I think it's an excellent Idea - and Apple is proof that it can work.

Apple took BSD and Mach (which were arguably even less user-friendly than Linux) and made it work for them.

One of the big reasons Apple is worth more than Dell is because Apple gets both the software and hardware parts of the profit from the computers it sells.

Scanning IdeaStorm it seems that while overall people like Dell, they seem to hate the software Dell includes with a passion.

For the people who demote it, why shouldn't Dell try to do to Linux what Apple did to BSD/Mach?

Rumor is that Google is getting closer to its own OS... linux-based. I don't see any value in this to Dell, however. Partnering, yes. A Dell splash screen, definitely.

I have to agree with jmxz. Dell should explore their own Linux disto, or better yet a BSD distro. It's not like it's competing with other distros, Linux/and BSD are about open community. Building upon other things. The spirit in which Ubuntu was embraced by Dell shows that Dell can succeed where Apple's OpenDarwin project failed. It's not like your throwing out your Windows out the window it's about meeting your own needs as a company and looking toward the future.

If it meant that Dell could better manage driver compatibility and update tools, yes, I think Dell might want to consider this.
