Linux Pre-Installed on Business Laptops

580 points posted to Linux by dbyte32 07/02/07

Dell should offer Linux pre-installed on business laptops, not just home laptops.
Dell currently offers Red Hat Enterprise on the Dimension N Series, Optiplex N Series and Dell Precision Workstations for businesses. What's the problem with offering Red Hat Enterprise on the Inspiron, Latitude, Precision Mobile and XPS notebooks? Dell currently has the expertise in house for Red Hat Enterprise since they have been selling it for years. Support can be purchased directly from Red Hat with dell supporting hardware issues.

At the least allow customers to buy the business laptops without windows, so then they have the option of purchasing a copy of Red Hat Enterprise from Red Hat directly and installing it themselves.

dell_admin4 I think this a duplicate of an older idea. If so, might be nice to acknowledge the older one.....here's one but there may be even older

In this case, I'm not sure this one and 67113 really are dupes. 67113 seems to be about allowing businesses to order Ubuntu systems in volume (from our consumer sales pages). Whereas this idea seems to be about offering Linux varieties on more systems, including business laptops. However, to your point, there may very well be a dupe of this somewhere, which we'll look for - but let us know if you find it first.

On the acknowledgments from dell_admin4... we're going to stop acknowledging ideas altogether for now. I had told the new moderators to start acknowledging the ideas - going forward - as they read them and pushed them into our idea review/management process. Some in the community had asked for some kind of sign that Dell had seen their idea, and there was an old idea regarding 'acknowledging' ideas. I don't know what the right answer is, but I know we'll find it. In the mean time, we won't acknowledge as we read (just as we didn't before last week) - it's actually one less thing we have to do, so we can focus instead on pushing more ideas into our review pipeline. And yes, the good and the bad get looked at. :)

Why don't you use emoticons for ideas (like the ones in skype) instead of words - smiley, thinking, laughing, working, angry, etc.... Use words for 'Coming soon' and 'Implemented', forget 'acknowledged' but the for rest just give funny little pictures......

I still think those ideas are duplicates...maybe not the words but certainly the intent - the intent I suppose was to stop Dell from limiting sales of Ubuntu and in both cases and both gave the specific example of business computers. Anyway you're the boss!

I have to agree with dell_admin1 as to the interpretation of my post. I wanted to Dell to provide Linux on Business Laptops, since Dell sells business Desktops with Redhat and top of the line components. I see no reason why Dell can't offer Red Hat Enterprise 5 on business laptops. Maybe some of the goals of this post does intercept with the idea 67113 in regards to allowing businesses to buy Linux laptops. I assumed that post was more focus on business users that wanted to purchase the Ubuntu Home Systems that Dell was offering an use them for business without Dell discriminating how they purchase it, either through a personal account or a business account . For me, I want to purchase a Dell M90 with Red Hat Enterprise 5, since I do a lot of traveling and development.
